Do you know why we conduct sea turtle nest relocations in Seychelles?🇸🇨🤔 This is because at times some nests are: ➡️ laid too close to the high tide line and in danger of being submerged ➡️are at danger of getting washed away where beaches face erosion ➡️ or are just laid at an unsafe spot, like close to a footpath. In these cases, we carefully excavate the nest and move the eggs to a new safe spot, where the conditions mimic the original nest as much as possible. This entire process of moving the eggs is undertaken incredibly carefully by our trained team members - like ORP Intern Elodie here!👏 With each relocated nest, we’re able to give sea turtles’ nests better chances at producing little hatchlings!💪 🚫 Please note, touching sea turtle eggs or nests is prohibilted by law in many countries. Relocation is a crucial conservation technique that can only be conducted by trained individuals after obtaining permission from relevant local authorities. . . . . #ORPSeychelles #SeaTurtleConservation #SeaTurtleNesting #SeaTurtles #ORPIntern

🚨 We were recently sent this upsetting video posted on Tiktok, showing someone ‘riding a sea turtle’. Despite the laughing face emojis in the caption, there is absolutely NOTHING amusing about this video. We would like to remind all charter companies and tourists visiting the Seychelles that sea turtles are a protected species, and as stated under the Seychelles Wild Animals and Birds Protection Act (1961), ‘no person shall disturb, catch or injure a turtle.’ As the video shows, the turtle is clearly distressed and struggling to break free. We urge all visitors to choose tour operators that prioritise ethical wildlife encounters and respect our local wildlife. 🇸🇨 @m_e_c_e_n_r @visitseychelles #responsibletourism

Wait for the breath! Did you know that even sea turtles have to breathe air? Though they can hold their breath for 4-7 hours while resting, during foraging they go up for air every 15-30 minutes. To as little as every 4 minutes when they’ve used a lot of energy! Take a breath of fresh air with this hawksbill sea turtle from Mauritius! #seaturtles #oceanvideography #mauritiuswildlife #hawksbillturtle #indianocean

Did you know that the average clutch size of a green sea turtle nest is round 115? This is what it looks like when a nest erupts. The hatchlings will start out as eggs, over 60 days they’ll develop, leave the eggs and then make their way from the sand and then to the ocean. Isn’t nature amazing!

Breathtaking! Every time I see a sea turtle I can't help but remember that I am witnessing a product of miracles. Because it must surely be only through a series of miracles that any turtle manages to reach maturity. Female sea turtles lay hundreds of eggs at a time and from this point on the turtles are at risk of death. Numerous animals have learned how to dig up turtle nests and feast on the eggs. These aren't only wild animals, feral dogs also do this and even, shamefully, us humans. And for the few eggs that survive and hatch, the threats don't reduce, they multiply. Hatchlings can fall prey to crabs, birds, lizards, snakes, fish, light pollution...the list is endless... as they make the long and perilous journey from beach to open sea. It is estimated that only 1 in 1000 turtles survive. It used to be that once the turtles reached adulthood their safety was almost assured, only having to fear the occasional shark. But now with plastic chocking our oceans and nesting beaches shrinking due to the insatiable monster that is 'development', things are looking bleek for these angelic creatures maybe even too bleek for miracles. . . . . #hawksbillseaturtle #seaturtle #turtle #scubadiving #wearessi

"No navigator to find my way home"🎵 In an extraordinary feat of nature, the Hawksbill Turtle travels thousands of miles to the exact beach where her life began. Guided by an internal biological GPS, using the Earth’s magnetic pulse she returns home to lay the eggs of the next generation. 🧭🌎📍 Swimming alongside this critically endangered species brought me joy and sadness at the same time. What a privilege it was to capture this video! 🥹 She will lay 400-600 eggs every 2-3 years and only about 1 in 1000 will survive to adulthood to repeat the cycle. The odds of beating extinction are stacked against these beautiful marine reptiles. 🐢🥚 #EndangeredSpecies #OceanEncounters #MarineBiology #NatureIsWild #OceanConservation

Just happened at @sirrufenfushi.maldives 🐢 There is still much we don’t know about the life cycle of turtles. Scientists are still unsure exactly where turtle hatchlings spend the first few months or years of their life. Hatchlings probably enter an oceanic phase after leaving their nesting beach #maldives #turtle #oliveridley
