📍Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach is one of the most iconic views on the Oregon Coast, but have you experienced a sunset and bonfire here?
🔥 Bonfires are allowed on the beach when there is not a burn ban in effect and in my opinion the best way to spend an evening on the Coast.
🪵 Only purchase wood and fire supplies at nearby gas stations or your hotel.
🏨 Some hotels and stays have kits for you to take to the beach and will even set them up for you.
💨 The Oregon Coast can get very windy, so many sure to check weather conditions in advance!
⛔️ Don’t make fires when a burn ban is in effect.
⚠️ Make sure to put fires out at the end of the night and don’t leave them burning.

THA giant Pacific octopus, the largest and longest living octopi species in the world, was rescued near Haystack Rock earlier this month after struggling in the waves and rocky areas along the beach.
The crawling creature was first spotted at around 9:30 a.m., June 7, 2023, as the tide was going out between Haystack Rock and the Needles, another nearby rock formation. The person who saw it contacted Haystack Rock Awareness Program @haystackrockawarenessprogram who quickly sent a team to return the eight-legged cephalopod back to deeper waters. It hasn’t been seen since.

ZIThe wind picks up, the waves crash, and there it is — Haystack Rock rising out of the mist like something straight out of The Goonies. You half expect to see One-Eyed Willy’s ship just offshore, waiting for the brave (or the slightly ridiculous).

OUOne rock stack might look pretty, but it can do a lot more harm than you think.
This rock stack I’m knocking over is not an official cairn used for navigation. It was placed here by visitors who likely thought they were leaving something harmless behind. But stacking rocks in natural areas causes real problems.
According to @leavenotraceorg , moving rocks disturbs habitats for insects, reptiles, and microorganisms. It can lead to soil erosion and damage fragile ecosystems that take decades to recover. Rock stacks also create confusion for other hikers when they are mistaken for official trail cairns, which are carefully built and maintained by park staff to mark the safest path.
The @nationalparkservice states: “Stacking rocks removes them from their natural setting and can cause harm to the environment and historic sites. Leave rocks as you find them.” They and other land managers have asked visitors to knock down unauthorized rock stacks whenever it is safe to do so, to help protect the landscape and reduce confusion for other hikers.
If you want to protect wild places, enjoy the view without rearranging it. Let nature stay wild and do your part to Leave No Trace.

And just in time for our "Puffin Welcome" Celebration this Saturday too! As always we caution that seeing a puffin isn't always guarenteed due to the low numbers and other factors.
