Imagine being the man who shook empires, yet in your final moments, your only concern is whether you are worthy of resting next to your Prophet (ﷺ).
When Hazrat Umar (R.A) was fatally wounded, he sent his son, Abdullah ibn Umar, to Hazrat Aisha (R.A) with a humble request. Even as he lay dying, his respect for her was so immense that he instructed his son: “Do not say ‘The Leader of the Believers’ asks permission, for today I am no longer their leader. Say, ‘Umar asks permission.’”
Hazrat Aisha (R.A) famously replied, “I had wanted that spot for myself, but today I prefer Umar over myself.” Upon hearing the news, Umar (R.A) did not celebrate his status; he thanked Allah, for his greatest dream was to be reunited with his companions in the earth of Madinah.
