HOHellraiser: Bloodline (1996) is the fourth film in the Hellraiser film series and the first in the franchise to explore the origin and future of the cursed puzzle box known as the Lament Configuration.
The story spans three different time periods, all connected to the same bloodline of a French toymaker family and the puzzle box they created.
1. 18th-Century France (Origin)
In 1796, a talented toymaker named Philip Lemarchand is hired by a mysterious aristocrat, Duc de L'Isle, to build an intricate puzzle box. Lemarchand later discovers the box is meant to open a gateway to Hell and summon the demonic beings called Cenobites. Horrified, he realizes he has unknowingly helped create a device that unleashes unimaginable evil.
2. 1996 – New York City
Two centuries later, Lemarchand’s descendant John Merchant, a successful architect, is manipulated by a cult led by Angelique, a demon connected to the original box. She plans to use John’s new skyscraper design to recreate the puzzle’s power on a massive scale. During these events, the iconic Cenobite leader Pinhead returns, leading to violent supernatural chaos.
3. The Future – Space Station (2127)
In the distant future, another descendant, Dr. Paul Merchant, deliberately opens the puzzle box aboard a space station. His goal is to lure Pinhead there so he can finally destroy him. The station itself is secretly designed as a giant version of the puzzle that can close the gateway to Hell permanently.
Ending (Brief)
Dr. Merchant activates the station’s mechanism, transforming it into a massive configuration that traps and destroys Pinhead and the Cenobites, seemingly ending the curse created by Lemarchand centuries earlier.
