There’s a difference between fear and awareness. Fear spirals. Awareness steadies. I lost Oakley on 12/29/25 to hemangiosarcoma. A tumor had ruptured on his spleen causing internal bleeding. By the time I got him to the emergency vet, I had very little time to make a hard decision. He was suffering in pain, and I was dying inside knowing this would be the last time I’d ever see him. Hemangiosarcoma often develops internally — especially in the spleen or heart — and early symptoms can be subtle or non-specific. That’s what makes it so devastating. Later that night after coming home and losing my best friend, I went down every rabbit hole, questioning myself on what I could’ve done differently and how couldn’t I have known. Never in a million years would I ever want anyone else to feel the way I did. I share his story not to scare anyone — but because loving well sometimes means understanding the quiet things too. If you’re loving a dog right now, you deserve calm, clear information — not panic 🤍🐾 I created this page to grieve Oakley but also help, and ultimately make a difference for other dogs in the future. Resources are always in my bio when you want them.

Hemangiosarcoma is one of the most challenging cancers we face in Golden Retrievers. Unlike single-gene disorders with a straightforward DNA test, hemangiosarcoma risk is polygenic — influenced by multiple genetic regions working together. That means there isn’t a simple “yes or no” test for breeders to use yet. What we can do today is focus on the factors that truly make a difference: • Multi-gene risk research: Ongoing studies at the Broad Institute, University of Minnesota, and the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study are identifying genetic regions associated with increased risk. This is where future multi-gene risk assessments will come from. • Longevity in breeding lines: One of the strongest indicators of reduced cancer risk is proven longevity in a pedigree. We pay very close attention to dogs and ancestors who lived well into their senior years (12–14+). Long-lived lines matter. • Lowering COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding): Higher COIs can increase expression of harmful recessives and reduce genetic diversity. We work to keep COIs as low as possible in our pairings while still preserving working ability and type — a balance that supports long-term health. Research is moving in the right direction, but early detection is still difficult. Hemangiosarcoma often shows no symptoms until internal bleeding occurs. Subtle signs may include pale gums, fatigue, or weakness that comes and goes. Emergency signs include collapse, labored breathing, abdominal swelling, or coughing blood. We experienced this firsthand with our own girl, Birdie, whose symptoms appeared suddenly despite being energetic and healthy right up until that day. Her diagnosis was confirmed with a liquid biopsy — a test that detects existing cancer, not future risk — and we made the difficult decision to let her go that night. Our goal in sharing this is education, not fear. Awareness + responsible breeding + advancing science = a healthier future for Goldens. #birdieandherbumper #hemangiosarcoma #goldenretrievers #birddog #huntingdog #fieldgoldenretriever

A common misconception is that if your senior has normal lab work then they are healthy. . Some of the most common cancers in our pets do not show major changes in lab work. . Cancers such as hemangiosarcoma, carcinoma, osteosarcoma, mast cell tumor and transitional cell carcinoma often show normal lab work values. . This makes it extremely difficult to know that our senior pets are healthy. So what do we do? . Radiographs are a much better indicator or cancer in our senior pet or an abdominal ultrasound yearly to monitor for cancer. . We do now have NuQ and Oncotect which are blood/urine tests to help indicate certain kinds of cancers. But these are not routine. . This is often cost prohibitive and I’m not saying you have to do this. . I just want owners to know that if your pet is having nonspecific signs and they have normal lab work, maybe ask for more testing. . Nonspecific signs of cancer could include: 🐾 Intermittent appetite changes, vomiting, diarrhea 🐾 Urinating or drinking more or less 🐾 Weight loss or gain 🐾 Muscle loss 🐾 Coughing 🐾 Lethargy . . What are you concerned about in your senior pet? . . #seniorpets #trialreel

Graffiti was given just 4–6 weeks to live. Today marks 12 weeks with him still here beside us. Every extra day with him feels like a gift. His strength and resilience continues to inspire us more than we can put into words. These past few months have been the hardest we’ve ever faced, but being his caretakers through this journey has also been one of the greatest honors of our lives. Right now Graffiti is doing well, enjoying his routines and the simple moments that mean everything. Thank you for every prayer, kind message, and hopeful thought you’ve sent his way. Your love has helped carry us all. This extra time together is the greatest gift we could ever receive. We’re cherishing every day and continuing to hope he keeps defying the odds. #hemangiosarcoma #dogcancer #corgi #dogdad #caregiving

Bowen’s last boat ride 💔 After Bowen’s Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis, we didn’t know if she’d have days, weeks, or months with us. We were also expecting our first baby at any minute- time was not on our side for more boat rides. We wanted to be sure we did the most with what time we did have left and capture as much of her as we could. The boat had been broken down for months, but dog dad made it his mission to fix it so she could have one last ride. The boat was truly her happy place. 🤍 Knowing this would be her last boat ride was heartbreaking. For us, this ride brought so many tears, but for her, it brought so much joy. 💔❤️ *this boat ride was taken just days after her diagnosis. She was with us for almost 4 more weeks, until her unfortunate and heartbreaking rapid decline* #dogs #goldenretrievers #petloss #hemangiosarcoma #doglove

It’s been two weeks since we said goodbye to Bowen. We still expect her presence everywhere and with every aspect of our day and routine. It still doesn’t feel real that she’s gone. We miss her so much. 💔 I started making this little series of “things I never want to forget about my senior dog” before we even received Bowen’s diagnosis. These clips are all from her final weeks after her hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. They bring me so much joy, but also sadness and confusion as she still seemed to be her normal self and so full of life. We made the most of those final days and weeks we had with her- all together as a family- and for that, I find some degree of comfort. #dogs #hemangiosarcoma #petloss #goldenretrievers #gloriousgoldens

We’re often told it’s better to let him go on a good day, and sometimes those statements are followed by the suggestion that continuing to care for Graffiti is only prolonging suffering. But there is no universal timeline for goodbye. We follow what he shows us, one day at a time, one moment at a time. Right now Graffiti is still here, still eating, cuddling, playing, and continuing the small daily routines that make him who he is, and every minute is precious. Today I shared a deeper reflection on how we are preparing for each possibility, and why his comfort, not fear, continues to guide every step forward. Comment “link” and I’ll send you the article where I share more about how we are navigating this decision. #hemangiosarcoma #dogcancerjourney #corgi

Some stories feel too incredible to be coincidence. And this one touched me so deeply, I knew I had to share it with you. Scout was one of four puppies, and over the years, we were lucky enough to meet two of his littermates before they passed. Timber gave the same exact Scout hug and became my comfort after Scout was gone. Kirby lived in Minneapolis, and although I never met him in person, we connected before he passed. And just like his brothers, he gave the same hug too. We always wondered about the fourth sibling the one we never found. Until the other day. While walking Archie, a woman approached me with tears in her eyes asking if she could say hello. Her golden had just passed in May. As we talked, we discovered something that gave us both chills. Her boy, Finn, was the last puppy from Scout’s litter and all these years lived in the same neighborhood! We cried. We hugged. And in that moment, I truly felt like Scout and Finn brought us together like they wanted us to know they’re still here. Still watching over us in their own quiet ways. Scout passed at six years old. Timber at seven. Kirby at eight. And Finn lived the longest, ten beautiful years, until cancer took him too. All four brothers. All gave the same unforgettable hug. All had the same sweet soul. And all of us who loved them are forever connected by their big hearts, their silly personalities, their love of food, their floofiness, and the kind of love that never really leaves. I believe they are never truly gone. You just have to watch for the signs. I truly believe this was all four brothers letting us know they were together again. Have you ever experienced something like this a sign from the rainbow bridge? I would love to hear your story, too. . . . . . . . #heartdog #godwink #goldenretrievers #serendipitous #doghugs #freehugs #hemangiosarcoma #signsfromheaven Pet loss | signs from the rainbow bridge

Advice I’d give myself after losing my dog to cancer when she was just 5 years old; It’s been 3 months, and I still miss Bella every single day. I wish I could tell you that time will heal but for me, it hasn’t yet. Grief will get lighter over time, and you are not alone. If you feel alone, message or follow me. I will gladly listen to your story, and we can navigate this grief together. 🌈🤍 #dogloss #petgrief #grief #hemangiosarcoma #dogcancer

Hemangiosarcoma is cruel, fast, and unforgiving. It often shows little to no warning signs until it’s already advanced. Dak was happy, active, and seemingly healthy up until his spleen ruptured and the cancer had already metastasized to other organs. I always wanted to make the best decision for Dak and not feel like I made the wrong one. Dak’s ER vet was honest about his prognosis and answered all of our questions but with any choice like this it’s hard to feel like you’ve made the right choice. I’ve spent the last few days reading other stories about dogs with HSA and confirming how aggressive and horrible it is. Dak didn’t owe me more time. He gave me everything he had already. More days doesn’t always mean good days. I am thankful for all the time we had and adventures we shared. I am honoring the life he lived instead of waiting for it to become suffering. A *somewhat* peaceful goodbye is a gift. #dogcancer #humaneeuthanasia #souldog #dogowner #hemangiosarcoma

Everyone talks about exercise… but no one talks about how your dog STANDS! It’s Senior Pet Month and 🩵Renzo🩵 (11) is five weeks post–splenectomy for hemangiosarcoma. We are rebuilding from stillness: standing square on two stable platforms to restore balance, symmetry and joint alignment. Frankie was diagnosed with canine hemangiosarcoma in July last year. Two months later, she died. Losing a soul dog is devastating. While nothing makes that loss easier, we were grateful to know what was coming and to make the most of the time we had left together. She only had a week or two remaining, and the cancer would have ended her life in a traumatic and painful way. We chose to let her go a little early, sparing her unnecessary suffering and giving her a peaceful goodbye. Frankie was a once-in-a-lifetime dog companion — there will never be another her. She was my dog, my friend, and my support through some of my darkest moments. I had her from a puppy until the very end of her life, and I will always feel incredibly fortunate to have loved a dog so deeply that saying goodbye hurts this much. Loving is the greatest privilege of my life. If you have lost your heart/soul dog - I see you ❤️‍🩹 #gspofinstagram #souldog #heartdog #gsp #petgrief
