Hills I Will Die On as a High Masking AuDHD Mum to a High Masking ADHD Daughter 🧠 Just because she’s quiet doesn’t mean she’s coping. Stillness doesn’t mean a still nervous system. 🧠 High masking is not the same as high functioning. It just means she’s learned how to hide her struggle so that you don’t notice 🧠 If she stims, she stays regulated. That small repetitive movement with her feet? That’s her nervous system self soothing. I will never shame that out of her. 🧠 Exhaustion after social events is not attitude. It’s the crash after a acting “normal.” 🧠 She is allowed to take up space without being loud about it. ADHD in girls often whispers. That doesn’t make it smaller. 🧠 I will not praise her for how well she masks. I will praise her for knowing when to unmask. 🧠 She does not owe the world eye contact, small talk or constant cheerfulness. 🧠 I am raising her to understand her brain, not fight it. I can’t quiet the world for her - but I can build her a space where her nervous system is safe. Save this for the days you forget and send it to someone who needs a softer place to land too ✨

It’s time for childhood trauma, honey!!!! You know what’s I always find so wild about it? For some of us, it’s been such an obvious, persistent part of our lives that it’s actually hard to imagine there are people out there who wouldn’t connect with it at all. I’m constantly joking about my own and am sometimes met with stares like uhhhh Chrissy that is not normal or ok, you know that right? And then I snap back to reality and am like oh shit, thank you for saying that, you’re probably right. It’s hard to explain but it’s one of those things that if you know, you know. I SO loved sitting down with @drjudithjoseph, so much so that I’ll be posting little moments from our chat all week. I was mostly an absolute wreck of tears in it, but I found it to be the most needed conversation we’ve had so far on Self-Conscious. Beyond trauma, we talk high functioning depression, discuss the meaning of anhedonia (I had no idea!) and figure out how to find our way back to true joy. Out episode is out now on @audible 🤍

Does your parent not believe in neurodivergence but they seem a little neurodivergent? 🤦🏾‍♀️ Many adults are never diagnosed with having neurodivergent traits in their childhood because healthcare professionals years ago were looking for behavioral cues that may have been more easy to spot such as some of the behavioral disruptions. 🤔 When children are not accepted they may be encouraged by their parents to mask behaviors. In my research I’ve found that neurodivergent masking may lead to High Functioning depression. However with growing awareness about different presentations, in neurodivergent children especially in girls and underrepresented groups, people are discovering different ways neurodivergent traits shows up in childhood…👧🏽 As parents learn about these differences in neurodivergent traits this sometimes leads them to later recognition of neurodivergent traits within themselves as there may be a genetic component.🧬 What are ways that neurodivergent behavior has shown up in nuanced presentations that led to difficulties in identifying traits in your experiences?👇🏽

Dr. Sara Kohlbeck, a leading researcher in suicide prevention and psychiatry, explains how many individuals continue to show up for their lives while silently struggling. You may be going to work every day, caring for your children, and performing well in your career, all while carrying the heavy weight of these thoughts. This "masking" is often a function of anxiety or the desire not to be a burden to those you love. You might find yourself showing up for everyone else even when you feel unable to show up for yourself. It is important to look past the stereotypes of what a mental health crisis "looks like." Understanding that high functioning suicidal ideation exists is the first step toward healing. If you or someone you know is putting on a mask to get through the day, please remember that support is available and you don't have to carry this alone. #suicideprevention #suicideawareness #recoveryispossible #RecoverySupport #youarenotalone

Yeah, that’s called masking. What you see: Calm. Organised. High functioning. What you don’t see: Complete internal chaos. Racing thoughts. Constant overwhelm. I’ve been performing “calm” my whole life. Learned early that the real me, scattered, impulsive, easily distracted, wasn’t acceptable. So I learned to hide it. Hypervigilant about appearing normal. Overprepared for everything. Rehearsing conversations in my head. Suppressing every impulse. It looked like I had it together. Really, I was just exhausted from the constant performance. And when your nervous system is dysregulated on top of ADHD? Masking takes even more energy. You’re not just hiding the ADHD symptoms. You’re also managing the constant fight-or-flight activation from dysregulation. That’s why “calm” ADHDers are often the most burnt out. Because the performance never stops. When I started regulating my nervous system, I didn’t suddenly become chaotic. But I stopped needing to perform calm. I could just… be. Without the constant internal management. If you’re “calm” and ADHD and exhausted—you’re not high functioning. You’re masking. And your nervous system is paying the price. 1. You can be extremely productive and deeply dysregulated at the same time. Productivity doesn’t mean your nervous system is okay. It often just means you’ve learned how to operate while disconnected from your own signals. 2. Many high-achieving people don’t know who they are outside of what they do. When your identity forms around performance and productivity, slowing down can create a sense of disorientation. Without constant output, you lose the structure you relied on for safety and self-definition. 3. People often confuse anxiety with responsibility. Constant vigilance can look like competence, but internally, it’s often driven by a nervous system that doesn’t feel safe unless everything is accounted for. 4. Burnout recovery is not just physical. It’s identity-level. It requires redefining who you are outside of constant output and resilience. 5. Overfunctioning is one of the most socially rewarded trauma responses. People praise you for being reliable, capable, and always handling everything. No one sees that it comes at the cost of your nervous system. 6. Many people don’t realize how much of their life is driven by fear of falling behind. That fear quietly shapes decisions, pace, and capacity. 7. Being “high functioning” is often just being better at ignoring your own limits. You still feel the exhaustion, the overwhelm, and the strain. You’ve just learned how to override it long enough that no one else notices. 8. You cannot heal burnout by becoming more disciplined. Burnout isn’t caused by a lack of effort. It’s caused by prolonged nervous system overload. Healing requires reducing chronic activation and increasing safety, not pushing yourself harder. 9. Feeling constantly “on” is not your personality. It’s your nervous system state. ✨ Follow me @talkingwithmorgan for more on anxiety & burnout 🚫 Instagram is not a substitute for therapy. Comment “Joy” to learn more about Anhedonia and whether or not you have the signs. 💌 I am a world renowned expert in JOY and Anhedonia is a symptom where you lack joy and interest in things that once brought you joy. I conducted the world’s first and only peer-reviewed study on high functioning depression and have studied Anhedonia extensively. 🔬 My national bestselling book offers step by step evidence based ways to access joy no matter what is causing the anhedonia. 📕 September is a month where we bring about awareness on suïcide prevention and depression. People may be particularly susceptible in September due to the Summer ending and going back to school and work full-time along with changing seasons.🍁🍂
