Work hip IR with a plan if.. -It feels tense in the front/outer hip region⁣ -You’ve saved a bunch of ‘hip mobility’ posts that haven’t helped⁣ -Your hips/glutes feel tight and/or weak⁣ -Sitting in a flexed/rotated hip is uncomfortable⁣ ⁣ Everyone should own their hip internal rotation to SOME degree. Even if range is limited, strength/control is a must esp with high level activity. ⁣ ⁣ Whether you’re dealing with a hip labral tear, impingement, back pain, hip tightness/knee pain, hip rotation strength and control will likely be an area to address.⁣ ⁣ WHEN & WHY:⁣ The hip must internally rotate to push off & change direction. The glutes and adductors help do this.⁣ ⁣ Limited hip IR can cause the necessary motion to be made up elsewhere & demand more from other areas (i.e. pelvis/low back) and be a risk for injury.⁣ ⁣ ADDRESSING MOBILITY:⁣ ⁣90/90 hip rotations as can be great to gain range of motion but may be too challenging OR inappropriate and for some hips.⁣ ⁣ Sometimes due to lack of IR range, pain, or bony variations in the socket, flexing the hip with hip IR may not allow for a comfortable starting position and (further) aggravate the hip.⁣ ⁣ There’s a way to ease into your available mobility and explore what you have! ⁣ ⁣ HOW TO DO IT:⁣ 👉🏼 1/2 kneel hip IR stretch: to target the front/outer hip of the bottom leg⁣ -In 1/2 kneel, press the rear shin down to secure that hip & knee⁣ -Rotate the PELVIS towards that side to take up slack in the bottom hip, don’t let the bottom leg move⁣ -Tuck tailbone slightly, squeeze glute of bottom leg⁣ -Shift body forward slightly⁣ ⁣ -Quadruped hip IR: ⁣ I’ve used a towel to align my foot & knee, add a block between the knees for more isolation⁣ -Standing: knee to wall (think pendulum motion)⁣ -side plank + hip abd - hip progressively moving the hip behind the torso. ❓Looking for an active hip mobility exercise that increases range and enhances control?❓⠀⠀ ⠀ Controlled hip mobility is a huge asset for increasing athleticism and durability in all sports, including baseball.⚾️⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉Check out @yankees @lukevoit and @twins @t_beckham1 as I take them through this hip mobility flow focusing on fluid, stable hip mobility with a controlled transfer of center of mass. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ✅To give it a try, follow the video cues (sound on for verbal cues) and watch Tim and Luke because their form and effort are on point!🔥⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⚠️If you struggle to keep your heel down when you transfer your weight into your back hip, pause at the point just before your heel lifts, working to gradually increase depth before the heel lift. To progress to being able to leave your heel down, you may need to incorporate other exercises that target increasing dorsi flexion. ⠀⠀ 🛑Stop immediately if you have knee or back pain (the two areas of compensation when you lack hip mobility).⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⏭Progressions:⠀⠀ The only real progression I add to this (which both Luke and Tim can do; we just didn’t show it in the video) is to fully straighten and abduct your forward leg as you bring it out and back to the plank position. We hold it elevated in abduction for a 3-count before moving back to plank. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ All the players who train with me are undoubtedly shaking their heads because they know this 3-count hold progression all too well.
