JVIf you’re new to photography or video and the histogram looks confusing… this is for you.
This video is NOT an in-depth breakdown or super technical lesson.
It’s a starter guide to help beginners understand what they’re looking at and how to use it to avoid bad exposure.
Here’s the simple idea:
• The left side of the histogram shows dark areas (shadows)
• The right side shows bright areas (highlights)
• The middle is your midtones
If everything is pushed too far left, your image is too dark.
If everything is smashed to the right, your highlights are blown out.
The goal isn’t a “perfect shape.”
The goal is to avoid clipping, when details are lost in the shadows or highlights.
This is why the histogram is more reliable than just looking at your screen.
Your screen can lie depending on brightness, sunlight, or display settings, the histogram shows the actual data.
This video is just to help you get started and feel more confident using it.
Once you understand this, dialing in exposure becomes way easier.
