Today is opening day for “American Revolution: The Augmented Exhibition” at HNOC! The new exhibition immerses visitors in 3-D reconstructions of America’s fight for independence. Designed and produced by @histovery, the French technology firm behind “Notre-Dame de Paris: The Augmented Exhibition,” the exhibition will be on view through January 2027. Using a HistoPad—an interactive tablet—travel to Boston for a tea party, Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence, Yorktown to declare victory, and Versailles to sign a treaty. Learn how the Spanish colony of New Orleans served as a secret logistical hub for the Continental Army, and follow the military campaign of Spanish governor Bernardo de Gálvez as his multicultural coalition of free men of color, Acadians, and Indigenous volunteers score momentous victories against the British—from New Orleans to Pensacola. Admission is free; timed-entry tickets are required. 🎟️ Learn more and reserve your tickets via the link in our bio, under “On View.”

Five men dead. One snowy night. A spark that changed history. 💥 #OTD On March 5, 1770, the "Bloody Massacre" in King Street ignited a revolution. Today, join our @uvacareercenter IPP intern, Alyssa, as she kicks off a new series diving into our exhibition: "Declaring Independence: Creating and Re-Creating America’s Document." As we look toward #America250, Alyssa will produce videos tracing the revolution from its first sparks to the final victory. She’ll show you how rare artifacts in our collection tell the story of a nation being born—from the first draft of the Declaration in 1776 to the hard-won peace and nation-building that followed. #VA250 #UVA250 Video description: Title card features an engraving depicting the Boston Massacre with text: “The Boston Massacre. March 5, 1770." Video includes panning shots of visual and written accounts of the Boston Massacre as printed in books and newspapers and as seen in an exhibition gallery, in addition to a historic map of Boston. One newspaper features four woodcut caskets and a skull-and-crossbones design on each. End card features an engraving depicting a public reading of the Declaration of Independence with text: “Declaring Independence. An Exhibition: On View Now!” Video ends with a photo of the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library.

The Trent Affair (1861) was a major diplomatic crisis during the American Civil War. On November 8, Union Captain Charles Wilkes aboard USS San Jacinto intercepted the British mail steamer RMS Trent in international waters and forcibly removed two Confederate envoys—James Mason and John Slidell—who were traveling to Britain and France seeking diplomatic recognition and support for the Confederacy. Britain protested the seizure as a violation of neutral rights and freedom of the seas, demanding their release and an apology while preparing for potential war, including troop movements to Canada. The U.S. initially celebrated the act, but President Lincoln’s administration, facing the risk of fighting two wars, disavowed Wilkes’ overreach (he failed to bring the Trent before a prize court) and released the diplomats in December without formal apology. The incident highlighted tensions over neutrality, consular/diplomatic protections, and plenipotentiary missions, ultimately resolved through pragmatic de-escalation to avoid broader conflict.
