Most hitters get exposed on the outer half. They reach. They come around the ball. They try to “push” it the other way. That’s not opposite-field direction. That’s leaking energy. Leaking energy leads to opposite field flares, pullside rollovers, or simply not being able to pull the trigger on the outer half because it feels like you have to reach. When you can properly hold your coil and stretch, it gives you oppo direction and the ability to stay over the plate. If you can then let the ball travel and launch behind it, the game changes. You stop flaring balls opposite field, and start catching them flush. You stop panicking and reaching, because you know you have coverage of the whole plate. 90% of pitchers at the youth+high school levels, are going to try to live on the outer half. When you can take advantage of their game plan and drive pitches on the outer half for extra bases, you truly become dangerous as a hitter.
