At the start of this week I made a brain dump to do list. All the things I wanted to get done to feel productive and accomplished. But I added things I needed to do for my brain and my heart. One of these things was ☑️play music☑️ This is a little excerpt from a sleepy, short session with my community marimba group. We are not prepping for a performance, half our members are away, all of us were tired, but we decided to meet up anyway because we need it. This particular little tune is a practice called Hocketing. Two or more people play the same simple phrases, but offset by 1 note. When you get into the groove, it can sound magical. But it's a brain teaser! You have to simultaneously be aware of the other music around you, but focusing hard on your own part, especially as it speeds up! Our automatic brain really wants to shift back in line with the matching part. I just learned this phrase last night for the first time so my brain was boiling. My yoga brain was saying "your gaze should be inward". My Brene Brown brain was saying "stay in your lane!" My surgery brain was saying "don't celebrate too early!" If you listened to the end, you can see I made it about a minute. Even though my brain and body were exhausted last night, using it in this way felt so very great. #veterinarian #marimba #hocketing #musicalbrain #musictherapy #communityart #dvm #veterinarywellness

I’ve been chopping up Ugandan amadinda music which I’ve been quite obsessed with for a while. Amadinda is a xylophone like instrument around which players sit opposite each other playing interlocking hocketing patterns of cellular intervallic structures (if you get deeply into the interval cells of coltrane’s late period and then look deeply into this music you start to see the power of 1,2,5 and 1,4,5 cells and the glory of all their mutations). Since this music is mercilessly fast I split the sp404 pads so the top half contains the original speed chops while the bottom half contains the same samples but reduced in speed (which still sounds pretty fast and complex to be fair). Towards the end of the video I try intermixing both speeds but is pretty tough to do one handed while holding my phone. This is royal music which had a period of loss when Idi Amin came into power and banished symbols of the monarchy which he overthrew including the musicians and many instruments of this ancient tradition. Fortunately the music has survived and it’s still possible to access and learn about this lesser known African music (better when it’s not being dissected on a machine like this but I personally find chopping up and looping segments a good way to come to terms with the way the intervals interact with each other) #sp404

The very next day I have two shows at 3 and 7 (the 7pm one may not be sold out yet) with @glassbrickboulevard -the music of pianist Greg Johnson with @robertdoakfordyce killing it on bass and @celso_alberti on drums. It’s been a while since I’ve played with Greg and the guys-really looking forward to Sunday’s two shows at the @occidentalcenterforthearts -3pm is sold out and 7 is getting there too.
