HOLSTERING UNDER STRESS IS A TRAINED DECISION — NOT AN ADMINISTRATIVE TASK. In real-world encounters, the need to holster often occurs while the scene is still dynamic, cluttered, and emotionally elevated. Holstering is not about the scene becoming “safe.” It is about recognizing when the operational problem changes. Effective officers must be able to: • assess hands, distance, and access in real time • recognize when lethal force is no longer the primary solution • transition to physical control, movement, or environmental problem-solving without hesitation • manage a firearm safely while their heart rate and cognitive load are still high This is why holstering must be trained under stress — not only on a square range. At EFC, weapon transitions are deliberately trained inside live, decision-based scenarios so officers build the ability to change tools without freezing, rushing, or losing awareness. Because in the real world, the moment you need your hands most is often the moment you must put the gun away.

Forcing officers to holster under stress There are times when keeping the gun up is absolutely appropriate. But in civilian policing, situations can rapidly drop in force level. When a subject disengages, complies, or the threat de-escalates, officers may need to transition to less-lethal options or go hands-on. That transition creates a critical moment: holstering under stress. Holstering isn’t a casual administrative action it requires decision making, threat reassessment, trigger finger discipline, and awareness of proximity, movement, and teammates. If we only train drawing under stress and never re-holstering under pressure, we leave a gap where negligent discharges and poor transitions live. Training this deliberately builds: • Better force-level recognition • Safer transitions from lethal to hands-on • Confidence managing the gun when adrenaline is high

5 Objectives. One Box Drill. The main objective? Get officers to holster under stress. We don’t just train to draw fast. We train to think and transition under pressure. The 5 Objectives: 1️⃣ Process a man with a knife 🔪 2️⃣ Draw lethal 3️⃣ Suspect drops the knife but remains uncooperative 4️⃣ Officer recognizes deadly force is no longer justified and holsters 5️⃣ Immediate hands-on → takedown → low mount → win inside position (Disengage to less lethal is also a viable option.) This is decision-making under stress not just mechanics. Low mount / inside position works because it’s: ✔ Simple ✔ Retainable ✔ Repeatable @efcombatives Level 2

Holstering under stress matters. Box drills can vary in complexity and pressure. In this iteration, the goal is to make officers holster under measured stress at an intermediate level. The problem is created by forcing officers to process a subject armed with a knife, which drives a justified draw. That presentation acts as a form of de-escalation, the subject drops the knife but remains uncooperative, not combative. Officers must recognize the drop in threat level, adjust force accordingly, re-holster, and transition to hands-on control ( less lethal transition could be practical) What this shows is simple: even a minimal amount of pressure exposes how undertrained holstering really is. If you don’t train it under stress, don’t expect it to show up clean in the real world.

Add Pressure and Adjust Pressure testing your gear is as important as pressure testing your tactics. With both tactics and gear, finding where the leaks start to occur should happen in a training environment. By pressurizing these systems now, you can have a reasonable expectation of what will and won’t work when actual resistance is encountered. The hood popping up on a level 3 holster is a common occurrence in a dynamic environment. Learning how to solve that problem and get your weapon back into retention allows you to free up both hands for situations that don’t require a firearm to be drawn. Weapon Retention Shouldn’t Compromise You There are many weapon retention techniques that are viable and potentially effective. However, when looking at these techniques, ensure that they are not putting you in a worse position than you were already in. In a mirrored side grab, your ability to win an angle compromised because of their grip. It is paramount that you prevent them from gaining an angle on you and making a bad position even worse. You can help prevent the suspect from continuing to gain an angle by setting a frame. We prefer to have good head positioning off of that frame, and due to the level of force involved, this absolutely can include a strike while establishing that position. The hip whip uses the body’s biomechanics to torque the suspect’s hand while it is engaged on your weapon system. It also allows you to gain an angle once the suspect’s grip is cleared.
