Who’s with me? šŸ™‹šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜… I shared a similar reel two years ago, but boy, does this hit home more than ever… . We’re on 2.7 acres and I leave home only about once every two to three weeks now… but you don’t necessarily need ā€œlandā€ to be more self-sufficient and content at home! We started out urban homesteading on an average 9000 sq ft lot, and while I left home a lot more (wasn’t self employed then) we still spent all our free time at home - tending to our gardens, hanging with our kitties and chickens, learning new skills and hobbies, and just making the most of the space we had šŸ’š . . . . . . #farmlife (but not tradwife) #homesteading #gardening #selfsufficiency sustainableliving, garden life, backyard garden, animal lover, mini donkeys, chickens, crazy cat lady

I love having shelf stable foods in large amounts in my basement! Even before we owned land, I kept buckets of dried goods in my basement apartment. Especially for organic and high-quality ingredients, it saves SO much money buying in bulk versus buying in small packages at the grocery store. I figured up the savings a few years ago, and it was truly astounding. I also love that when the grocery stores are struggling with supply, I don’t have to worry about it. Also, if I’m baking and run out of flour or sugar in my containers upstairs, I can just run to my basement and fill up my containers. No need to call the neighbors or do emergency runs to the store. I get sugar, oatmeal, wheat berries, and rice from Azure Standard. We grow the dent corn, dried beans, and popcorn on her own land. They’re the perfect self-sufficiency foods. The salt we get from Redmond real salt. I have a discount code for Redmond salt in my bio if you’re interested. Your welcome.šŸ˜‰ #redmondrealsalt #MoreThanFarmers #FoodSecurity #GrowYourOwnFood #Homesteading

I posted a version of this video a few months ago and while I got plenty of support it got a major amount of backlash. I’m not entirely sure why some people are afraid to know how food becomes food. This way of life gives you the deepest connection to your food. These animals are raised with more care than anything you’d ever find wrapped on a styrofoam tray at the store. The entire animal is used, nothing is wasted and it is processed with dignity and respect. My kids don’t have their heads in the sand when it comes to the circle of life. These are skills that not nearly enough people have and it’s our responsibility to make sure future generations can take care of themselves. And for those asking - that’s a pig head Bailee is processing. So, while this has been one of the most controversial posts I’ve ever made (according to the internet) this is probably the best one I’ve ever made because it’s opened some eyes. Do your kids have skills like this too? #homemade #homestead #homesteading #homesteader #homesteaders homesteadinglife homesteadinglifestyle

It’s time to teach the next generation the life skills they truly need. And unfortunately, many of those aren’t taught in a classroom. But I have good news šŸ™ŒšŸ¼ I just launched my Gardening Basics eBook for Kids (ages 5–10) 65 pages packed with hands-on knowledge to help little hands learn how to grow their own food, build confidence, and connect with the land. Because growing food is more than a skill—it’s a foundation. Perfect for homeschool, classrooms, and curious young gardeners. šŸ„• Carrot Growing Tips! šŸ‘‡šŸ¼ Once you know these ā€œsecretsā€, you’ll see carrots are easy to grow - and one of THE most fun and rewarding crops to harvest! šŸŒž Carrots are cool-season crops, perfect for the spring or fall garden. In places with temperate winters or summers, you can grow them year-round! āœ… Direct sow carrot seeds outside (rather than starting indoors and transplanting, or buying seedlings.) 🌱 Plant carrot seeds either ā€œsurface sownā€ (scattered or pressed into the soil surface) or lightly covered with a sprinkle of potting soil or seedling mix, no more than Ā¼ā€ deep. They need consistent moisture to sprout, so you may need to give them light water everyday or every other day during germination - which can take a couple weeks. šŸŖCarrots love loose fluffy soil. Hard soil or obstacles can lead to stunted or deformed growth. If your soil is rocky, clay, or otherwise compact, loosen it to at least a foot deep and amend with potting soil, aged compost and/or horticultural sand. šŸ™…šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers. Carrots grow large leafy tops but smaller or deformed roots (carrots) with too much nitrogen. šŸ’§ Carrots love water! Ever had ā€œhairyā€ carrots? When carrots don’t get enough water, they send out tiny feeder roots in search of more. šŸ„• Thinning or spacing carrots to one sprout every 1-2 inches will give them the room they need to grow long, straight and large. Overcrowded carrots will stay much smaller or wrap around one another. ā°ļø Carrots take 3-4 months to mature. We usually start harvesting mini carrots early/as-needed rather than waiting for allll of them to be ready at once - though a huge carrot harvest is always fun! šŸœ Our favorite ways to preserve excess carrots include making lacto-fermented carrot ā€œpicklesā€ or freezing roasted carrot + sweet potato soup, though they last in cold storage (e.g. refrigerator or root cellar) for many months. 🌿 Carrot greens are edible too! They’re fantastic in pesto, chimichurri, added to green juice or homemade veggie broth. Our chickens enjoy eating them too. Save or share if this was useful, and happy growing! āœŒšŸ¼ #growfood #gardentips #homesteading #gardening #growyourownfood

Planting potatoes straight from the box that @hornacek_homestead gave me. Her and I have a non stop barter & I’m all about it! Yes, I know you can chit them and cut them… but I don’t have the space for more plants, so I’m keeping it simple. Also adding a little fireplace ash for that extra potassium boost 🌱 Gardeners… Do you plant them whole or do you chit?! #gardening #potatoplanting #gardensofinstagram #gardener #homesteading
