✨Save and share with someone who grows limelight hydrangeas Pruning Lime Light Hydrangeas For most of the plants in my landscape I refer to the experts for their maintenance. I purchased my lime lights from @provenwinners (not a sponsored post I just love their hydrangeas). The recommended time to prune lime lights is late winter or early spring. I love the look of the dried blooms in the landscape thus I leave them as long as possible. I also use the dried blooms in Fall and Winter floral arrangements. ⚠️ Not all hydrangeas require pruning as some grow on old wood. If you are not sure please do your research and look up your plants first. I am located in zone 8a and prune as soon as I see the first sign of hydrangeas buds. This is a great time to prune as I can clearly see where to cut. The recommendation for pruning lime lights is to cut only 1/3 of the plant’s branches back. Anything more can result in weak branches and unable to hold the weightof large blooms. As lime lights bloom on new wood, over cutting can also result in little to no blooms. Using sharp and clean pruning shears, I like to cut at a 45 degree angle just above the bud. Working with heavy clay soil, I add fresh organic matter like rich organic compost and top with a balanced slow release fertilizer. If you are unsure of what fertilizer to use, I go with the one from @provenwinners since they are the grower. You can find it on their website or Amazon. Again this is not a sponsored post. I just love their plants. I hope this simple video was of some assist to someone🌱 #pruning #hydrandeas #limelight

Even though smooth hydrangeas and mophead hydrangeas look very similar. They are very different varieties. Smooth hydrangeas, bloom on new wood and can be pruned anytime between full dormancy, which is after it’s consistently under 32° at night, all the way through early spring. Mophead hydrangeas bloom on old wood. They produce their buds in late summer early fall. Those buds will then become the next year‘s blooms. If you prune these after late summer, you will be cutting off the next year‘s blooms. Comment “VARIETY” and I’ll send you a reel on how to identify the different Hydrangea varieties. If your mophead hydrangea has gotten out of control, the only safe time to prune is directly after it blooms in the summer, but never after mid August. If you have the case of the winter blues, this is your reminder than brighter days are ahead. But if you want big, fluffy hydrangeas by summer, here’s how to treat them now so they look full and beautiful later: First, know what type you have. If they bloom on old wood (like Bigleaf hydrangea and Oakleaf hydrangea), do not aggressively prune in February. You’ll cut off this summer’s blooms. Only remove dead wood and clearly damaged stems. If they bloom on new wood (like my Annabelle hydrangeas or Panicle hydrangea), late winter is your window (ahem…that’s now!). Cut them back to about 12–24 inches tall. This encourages strong, sturdy stems and bigger blooms. Next: clean up the base. Remove old leaves, debris, and any fallen stems. This improves airflow and reduces disease pressure before the growing season kicks in. Then: feed fertilizer. Add compost around the base or apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer. You’re building the foundation now for lush growth later. Finally: mulch matters. Add a fresh layer of mulch (2–3 inches) to regulate soil temperature and retain moisture once the heat hits. My favorite is Gold Diamond Western Red Cedar. A little attention in February will give you full, overflowing blooms by July. Comment BLOOM below and I’ll send you links to my favorite fertilizer as well as a few of my favorite garden/landscape tools and supplies. https://liketk.it/5VVO7 #ltkhome #ltkseasonal #annabellehydrangea

There a few types of hydrangea that ONLY grow on old wood, like the “Nikko Blue”, the “City Line” series and the “Eclipse” Hydrangea. If we experience a freeze at this time and your hydrangeas aren’t protected, it’s likely that you won’t have any blooms this year 💔 Then, there are reblooming mop-head hydrangeas like “Endless Summer” and the “Let’s Dance” series that grow on old wood AND new wood. The buds that have already been developing on old wood will not survive a freeze, so it’s a great idea to use bedsheets, burlap, or large nursery pots to protect those buds! The good news is that your panicle hydrangeas like the “Vanilla Strawberry”, “Lime Light”, etc grow on new wood and are very forgiving. You will get blooms from those hydrangeas, no matter what the weather does this week!

If you’ve ever wondered how much of your hydrangeas to prune, you’re not alone. A recent question from one of our maintenance clients led to a great educational opportunity that we couldn’t keep to ourselves. 👇 Want more gardening tips? Make sure to follow @relish.gardens Before you start pruning, remember that some hydrangeas bloom on old wood while others bloom on new wood. Knowing which type you have is crucial. The hydrangea in this video is a Hydrangea macrophylla, which had been in the ground for years—so it was safe to prune aggressively. When pruning, the goal is to create a vase shape that allows plenty of light and airflow—which not only encourages healthier growth but also reduces the risk of disease and prevents future damage. 5️⃣ Steps for Healthier, Stronger Hydrangeas: ✅ Start by cutting out any branches that are clearly dead. ✅ Keep the strongest upright canes and remove weak, spindly ones that can’t support the weight of blooms. ✅ Remove crossing or rubbing branches which can cause future damage and allow disease to enter. ✅ Space out the remaining canes so that you can see through the plant slightly—this improves airflow, reduces fungal risk, and encourages healthier regrowth. ✅ Avoid shearing off the flowers or shaping your hydrangeas into a ball. This causes weak growth and over time it leads to a dense, chaotic structure with lots of dieback in the center. Hydrangeas are incredibly resilient and will push out plenty of new growth in the spring—as long as they have the proper amount of light and air. So don’t be afraid to start—your plant will thank you! 👇 Want more gardening tips? Make sure to follow @relish.gardens #hydrangeapruning #pruningtips

I have been getting a lot of this question: How these hydrangeas looks like in winter? ...simple answer, they literally look dead 😆 Must hydrangeas are deciduous shrubs. In winter they should be bare canes. They start to drop their leaves as soon they sense the change in temps, specially in my zone 6b-7a. I like to keep the dried, faded flower heads, they provide some winter interest until they fall of or are pruned in spring. So don't panic, new leaves will come in the spring and beautiful blooms in the summer again! Now I am curious...how they look in zones 8-9 🤔 Let me know your experience ✨️ P.S. These are Limelight hydrangeas from Proven Winners.

The Oakleaf Hydrangea is the answer to your hydrangea starvation!!! I see a LOT of unsuitable hydrangeas being planted in Texas and it almost always seems to result in frustration and failure. The classic pink and blue mophead hydrangeas are native to Asia, and perform wonderfully in colder climates. So here in Texas, particularly East Tx I’m kinda speaking to here, you can grow a hydrangea that’s very close to being native to Texas. Hydrangea quercifolia, the Oakleaf, is native to the gulf coast states just barely east of Texas. Thriving in woodland-like, shaded environments, with rich acidic soil, this hydrangea offers a unique experience to grow a plant that actually belongs in our gardens. What do you think about this?? #hydrangea #nativeplants #oakleafhydrangea

I was late pruning hydrangeas this year. Usually I’d prune in August but it was more like late September. The first video shows ones I pruned really hard right down to about shin height. These ones have huge flowers. The second I gave a much lighter prune. They have smaller heads but a lot more. These ones face south so get lots of hot sun which makes them turn slightly pink.
