Don’t make this mistake with your hydrangeas. Before you prune, make sure you know which type of hydrangea you have growing in your garden. Right now in late winter and early spring many gardeners start pruning hydrangeas, but different types flower on different growth. Some hydrangeas form their flower buds the year before on what’s called old wood. If those stems are cut back now, you may remove the flowers before they ever open. Hydrangeas that usually bloom on old wood include: 🌸 Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) 🌸 Mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) 🌸 Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) Because of that, pruning should be minimal. I usually leave my oakleaf hydrangeas mostly alone unless they need shaping or there is dead growth to remove. For bigleaf hydrangeas, I prefer to wait until the plant fully leafs out before touching it. Once the leaves emerge, it becomes much easier to see which stems are alive and which ones didn’t survive winter. At that point I’ll remove dead stems and clip off old blooms if needed. Reblooming varieties like Endless Summer can bloom on both old and new wood, but the earliest flowers still come from buds that formed the previous season, so I still prune them carefully after the plant fully leafs out. Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood can be pruned in late winter or early spring. These include: 🌸 Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) 🌸 Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) These are the ones I’m pruning back right now. A helpful rule of thumb when pruning hydrangeas is to avoid removing more than about one-third of the plant at a time. Save this post so you remember before pruning your hydrangeas this spring. 🌿🌸

Most people prune smooth hydrangeas WRONG… here’s what actually works 👀 I cut mine back HARD every early spring (about 6 inches) and they come back bigger and fuller every year 🌸 Don’t be scared to prune them — they actually LOVE it. I also use a simple fertilizer that makes a huge difference in how full they grow. 👇 Comment “LINK” and I’ll send you my full hydrangea care guide + everything I use (Canada & US) Save this so you remember what to do each spring 📌 IMPORTANT! These types are for Smooth hydrangeas!! DO NOT do this to your big leaf macrophylla hydrangeas. Bought these ones from @terraathome and they are from @provenwinners

It's amazing how much growth these Limelights hydrangeas put on from last year to this year 🥹 I planted them August 2022, only 2 years in ground...absolutely gorgeous! If you ask me...don't wait for fall to plant them -I planted 4 last October and I can see the difference in growth from the ones I planted in August....two months earlier give them enough time to adapt to your soil, create new roots and grow bigger for next summer! Hope you are having a great week so far! 🫠

Stop buying the wrong hydrangea… this is the one that gives those big fluffy blooms 👇” Everyone always asks me what hydrangeas I have because of how big and full the blooms get… and most people think they’re Annabelle — but they’re not! The variety you choose + how you prune makes all the difference 🌿 If you’ve ever struggled with small blooms or no flowers, it might just be the type you planted (or when you’re pruning 👀) Comment “HYDRANGEA” and I’ll share: • the exact variety I have • how I care for them • when to prune for those big, beautiful blooms Trust me… once you get this right, your garden will look completely different 🌸 I get all my hydrangeas from @terraathome @provenwinners #hydrangeas #gardeninspo #gardentips #springgarden #hydrangealove gardenideas homegarden flowergarden gardendesign planttips canadiangarden backyardgoals bloominggarden gardeninspiration springflowers

Most hydrangea problems aren’t about soil, fertilizer, or sun. They come down to one thing: pruning at the wrong time. Not all hydrangeas behave the same. Hydrangea macrophylla blooms on old wood — cut it in spring, and you remove your flowers. **Hydrangea paniculata blooms on new wood — prune it hard, and it actually performs better. If you don’t know what type you have, you’re guessing. And guessing is why your shrub is green… but empty. Save this before you prune. #hydrangea #hydrangeacare #pruningtips #gardenmistakes #gardendesign

Top 3 mistakes to avoid if you want show stopping hydrangeas!! 👇🏻 SAVE this post and follow @fidlinaroundhome for more home + garden tips + inspo 💙 🪴 Improper Pruning: Different types of hydrangeas require different types of pruning! For example, bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so prune after they finish flowering. However, panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood and should be pruned in late winter or early spring! 💦 Incorrect Watering: Hydrangeas need really moist soil, especially in their first year of growth. But overwatering (or not watering enough) can both cause stress to the plant. SO! Aim for deep, infrequent watering rather than shallow, frequent watering to encourage strong root development 🙌🏻 ☀️ Wrong Plant Location: Hydrangeas need the right balance of sunlight and shade to thrive. Too much sun can scorch the leaves, while too much shade can reduce blooming, SO plant hydrangeas where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade Are you making any of these mistakes?! Tell me below how your hydrangeas are doing!! Happy growing!! 💦☀️🪴 #hydrangeaseason #hydrangeasofinstagram #hydrangeaflower

Pruning hydrangeas doesn’t have to be confusing ✂️🌿 If you’re growing Hydrangea paniculata or Hydrangea arborescens, they flower on new wood, which means you can cut them back hard in early spring without worrying about losing flowers. In fact, cutting them down to around 30cm encourages: ✔ stronger stems ✔ bigger blooms ✔ a tidier plant This simple prune is one of the easiest ways to get huge hydrangea flowers this summer. Save this so you remember when you’re in the garden ✂️ Follow for simple, jargon-free gardening tips that actually work.

Link to my book is in my bio. TOP TIP!!! • * If you cut your hydrangeas all the way back to the ground, your plants will produce less flowers, but they’ll be very large. * If you cut back 1/3 of the plant, your hydrangeas will produce more flowers and they will be smaller. I personally prefer smaller blooms on sturdier stems and I only cut back 1/3 of the plant. WHEN TO PRUNE? Early Spring

Pruning hydrangeas: Not all hydrangeas are the same! In my garden, I have Hydrangea arborescens ‘Incrediball,’ which is known for its smooth, oval leaves and massive, globe-shaped white blooms that get stronger each year. I also grow Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight,’ with its striking cone-shaped flowers that emerge green before fading to soft pink in autumn. Now is the perfect time to prune these varieties! Both arborescens and paniculata bloom on new wood, so cutting them back in late winter or early spring encourages bigger, healthier flowers. I like to prune Incrediball hard, say two buds from the ground to keep its shape compact and the stems strong, while Limelight benefits from a lighter prune, removing around a third of its height to maintain structure and encourage fresh growth. Stay tuned for my upcoming reel on how to prune mophead (macrophylla) and lacecap hydrangeas! #Hydrangea #pruninghydrangeas #Annabellehydrangea #limelighthydrangea #incrediball #gardening

There’s more than one way to prune a Hydrangea paniculata (the ice cream hydrangea!) 🍦 They bloom on new growth, which means they’re very forgiving when it comes to pruning. There’s general rule: a harder prune = bigger but fewer flowers. 🌿 1. Light Prune (Lazy Prune) Simply cut just below the old flower heads. Produces lots of smaller blooms and creates a taller, natural-looking plant. You’ll get around 40 flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 2. Medium Prune (Balanced Option) Cut stems to about 40 cm above the ground. Produces medium-sized blooms with strong stems. A great middle ground used by many nurseries. It’ll give you about 30 flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 3. Hard Prune (Brave Cut) Cut stems down to about 20 cm above the ground. Results in fewer but very large flower heads. Keeps plants compact and structured. You’ll get about 20 giant flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 4. Don’t Prune at All (The Easiest Option!) Leave the plant completely untouched.. You’ll get smaller flowers, but still plenty of them. Plants grow taller and more tree-like with gnarly branches, which is quite sexy! Flowering may also start earlier, giving a very natural look. Best time to prune: Late winter to early spring before new growth appears (NOW!!) Awesome advice from @living.creations and @schoemaker.alex 🍦

Panicle hydrangea pruning can really make or break the plant, and I’ve learned over time that the less pruning you do, the better the plant is. In the end, this plant would never be pruned in nature anyways 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m excited to work on these trees and make them better for next year! #limelight #hydrangea #hydrangeatree #hydrangeapruning
