This is an amortal hydra with its unicellular cleaning crew, polishing its gorgeous tentacles. . Hydras are incredible organisms. They don’t go through something so fundamental in our lives: senescence. They don’t biologically age. A hydra stays as young as the first day of its life. No knees to crack, no hair to whiten, no eyes to show wisdom; their bodies simply do not experience the same aging our bodies do. . They are, however, not immortal; hence one of my favorite words, “amortal,” fits them perfectly. I often find hydras in my samples alongside aquatic snails. Let me tell you, those snails go to town munching on these remarkable animals, and they don’t give a dime whether the hydras age or not. 😂 I spend a few hours removing snails from my sample jars if I have hydras in there too, or the next day there is no hydra left to admire. . The unicellulars moving back and forth on the hydra’s body are called Kerona; they have a very close relationship with hydras. I really don’t know exactly why they prefer to live on hydras, but it may simply be that the hydra’s body creates a surface where these unicellulars can crawl and feed on smaller organisms that grow on the hydra. They seem to sense the hydra as well. Whenever I separate Kerona from a hydra, the Kerona quickly find it in the water and start crawling on it, which indicates that Kerona are sensitive to chemical signals hydras release into the environment. . If you can, please support me for the cost of a cup of coffee a month; links are in my bio and your support helps me create more content. If you cannot financially, I’m still very grateful for you being here, for being kind, well, even defending me against science deniers, people who call my writing or content “AI,” or people who are just unkind under my posts. My Instagram audience is well established after eight years, but my posts are crossposted on Facebook, and people can be unkind there, and it gets very tiring to see. So if you are new to my content, please be kind and remember that there is a human behind this whose brain was never meant to meet more than a few hundred people in its life. . Thank you for reading! Join @tardibabe as she goes on a deep dive into the hidden world of microscopy with city pond water! 💧🐞 "In the first clip, you can observe a brown hydra under polarized light! Hydras are Cnidarians, a primitive animal group that includes jellyfish, corals and sea anemones. Hydras have tentacles, a mouth, a digestive track and a foot so they can attach to different substrates, not your face tho so don’t worry! Clip 2 shows a single cell organism, a ciliate named Stichotricha aculeata! Ciliates are covered in thousands of small hair beating together to get the cell moving and also to attract food to the mouth. Stichotricha can be found in freshwater environments, such as ponds, lakes, and rivers, where it plays a crucial role in the ecosystem as a micropredator (watch out). It feeds on bacteria, algae, and other microbes. The third image shows developing snail embryos spinning in their egg! You might be able to distinguish the shell from the head, but they’re still pretty young so we can’t see their cute little black eyes just yet :( After what we take a look at a rotifer with really long legs. I’m not sure of the species name yet so let’s just call him Daddy! Rotifers are some of the smallest animal that lives on earth and you can find some pretty much everywhere, even in your bathroom sink! They have a bunch of cilia on their heads, a characteristic structure used for both locomotion and gathering food particles." 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 . . . #MicroWorld #Microscopy #Optics #Imaging #Objective #LifeScience #Biology #Research #Science #Scientists #LabLife #Laboratory #ImagingTechnology #FluorescenceMicroscopy #ConfocalMicroscopy #Microbiology #SciArt

🇬🇧Hydra is a genus of animals of the Cnidarian phylum. Cnidarians are relatively simple animals, specific to the aquatic environment; they include corals, sea anemones and jellyfish. Hydras, or Freshwater Polyps, are complex multicellular organisms. Geneticists consider that these polyps are immortal, thanks to their regenerative capacities. the hydra feeds on small invertebrates captured with the help of its tentacles. It immobilizes its animal prey by discharging the venom contained in its stinging cells, the cnidocytes. So many friends! 🤩 "In this video you can observe some gorgeous microorganisms, I’ll make a list for you to get to know them better: 1. You can observe a brown hydra under polarized light. Hydras belong to the Cnidaria group just like jellyfishes and anemones! Hydras have tentacles, a mouth, a small digestive track and a foot that can attach to different substrates. 2. Here we have a rotifer, one of the smallest animals that live on earth. This one’s called Testudinella and has a circular shaped body. Rotifers, also known as “Wheel Animals”, get their name from the ciliated crowns located on their head, a characteristic structure used for both locomotion and gathering food particles. 3. This clip shows a very funky amoeba named Cochliopodium! Amoebas can be found in both freshwater and marine habitats. If you look closely, you’ll see some small dots on the dorsal part of the cell (the part used for crawling)! These are small scales made of carbohydrates. 4. In the fourth clip you can observe a green algae called Micrasterias. It has a tiny star shape and bilateral symmetry. These freshwater unicellular algae are closely related to land plants so they’re often used as a model organism in plant cell biology research. 5. Here you can observe a baby snail in its egg!!! The black dot is the left eye and you can see the developing tentacles which look like small ears. 6. The last clip shows a swimming ciliate called Trachelophyllum! It moves with the help of thousands of microscopic hairs beating together. Can you see them? 😊" 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 #evidentlifescience #evident #olympus #microscopy #microscope #micro #microscopic #microscopicworld #lifescience #biology #microscopes #nature #science #scientists #microscopeimages #research #optics #imaging #objective #sciart #microworld

My idea behind introducing hydras into the SLESS environment is an intentional step toward establishing a more robust and complex trophic dynamic. By acting as a mid-level micro-predator, the hydras will actively hunt the existing microorganisms, helping to naturally regulate the microscopic food web. This addition might bridge the gap between the primary consumers and the eventual apex predator, creating a biologically rich, multi-layered ecosystem that perfectly preps the tank for a Scarlet Badis to thrive on a varied, live diet. However, this ecological experiment comes with significant risks to the tank's delicate balance.... Because hydras possess stinging tentacles and reproduce rapidly when food is abundant, they can easily overpower and consume juvenile scuds and newborn shrimplets. If the hydra population explodes before the Scarlet Badis is introduced to keep them in check, they could create a severe reproductive bottleneck for my detritivores, potentially collapsing the lower tiers of the food web before the system fully matures. What is your opinion? Link in bio for the phone lens, shrimp suplement, and microscope that I use. www.impossibleaquariums.com for more aquarium ecology.
