Yapı olarak su molekülüne benzer; ancak oksijen yerine kükürt bulunur. Bu nedenle molekül geometrisi bükük (V şeklinde) bir yapıdadır. Oda sıcaklığında renksiz bir gazdır ve en belirgin özelliği çürük yumurta kokusuna sahip olmasıdır. H₂S doğada genellikle organik maddelerin oksijensiz ortamda parçalanması sırasında oluşur. Bataklıklar, kanalizasyon sistemleri, çöplükler ve bazı volkanik bölgelerde bu gaz doğal olarak ortaya çıkabilir. Ayrıca petrol ve doğal gaz endüstrisinde de sıkça bulunur. Endüstride H₂S bazen kimyasal üretim süreçlerinde kullanılır ve aynı zamanda bazı süreçlerde istenmeyen bir yan ürün olarak ortaya çıkar.
