A lot of people asked, and there are two ways to set up the watering on the DIY Aeroponic System build that we shared. 😊
👉 Option 1 – You can get this pre-made spray manifold on Amazon. It connects to your water pump with tubing and sprays the roots. It's super easy to install, and you can find the link for it in our bio.
👉 Option 2 – You can build your own misting device by using irrigation tubing and micro sprinkler heads. This lets you customize your mister setup, but it takes a bit more effort. Sometimes, finding the pieces and putting them together can be challenging. However, it does work really well if you get the right pieces.
Both setups connect to a water pump that’s plugged into a timer. For example, the timer turns the pump on at 8:00am, 8:30am, 9:00am and so on, and each time it runs for 15 minutes before shutting off💧💧💧
And that’s how we water our plants! 🥳

ONPart 1 of 6: 🌱 How to Build a DIY Aeroponic System for Plants
👉 Start with a plastic bin made from HDPE (read more at bottom)
👉 Use a 2-inch hole saw to cut holes in the lid. Be careful—sometimes the hole saw can kick if the plastic cracks instead of cutting smoothly.
👉 Clean up the edges with a deburring tool and sandpaper, then wash the bins.
👉 Place the bins on the grow rack.
👉 Add airstones inside, run the tubing, and connect them to an air pump that runs 24/7.
👉 Set up the misting device, attaching it to a water pump with a timer to mist the roots with a fertilizer-water mix throughout the day.
🥳 And that's it! This simple DIY aeroponic system has been one of our favorite ways to grow greens indoors with minimal effort. We've had great success with Swiss chard, collards, kale, pak choi, and tatsoi. We actually started building these in 2018, before we launched On The Grow, and they’ve been a go-to ever since. Just keep in mind that they can leak, so be mindful of placement and consider using a rubber floor mat if needed. Link to supplies in bio!
👉 If you're concerned about plastics, we encourage you to do your own research and choose what feels right for you. We personally grow for our own consumption and use materials we're comfortable with. That said, this build may not be for you if you prefer a pre-made system—there are plenty of options available that might better suit your needs. The goal of this build is to inspire others and encourage them to make informed choices that work for them.

This vertical garden system uses simple PVC towers to grow a surprising amount of fresh vegetables in a very small space. Each tube has evenly spaced planting pockets where leafy greens like lettuce, kale, and herbs grow outward, forming lush green columns from top to bottom.

EPThrowback to how I started gardening! Hydroponic systems are fantastic low water use and high output systems, due to all the nutrients being readily available.
The system is a nutrient film technique build using PVC that's dropping and winding around a wooden frame. Water is pumped up to the top, and it falls down the system, creating a small film of nutrient-rich water at the bottom of each pipe, hence the name.
Plants are inserted into the PVC tubes with net pots, which are plastic pots with slits cut in them so roots can escape and access the nutrient rich water.
These types of systems are really good for growing high value crops like herbs or leafy greens. If there's interest, we'll make more hydroponic videos on the YouTube channel!
