Hyperbola Clock: one of the strangest timepieces in my collection featuring a straight rod which glides through a curved hole in this unconventional clock based on the hyperboloid, the 3D ruled surface traced by rotating diagonal line. In this creation by Robert Darwen of Fibonacci Clocks, the rod serves as the hour hand with a smaller minute hand above the center of the base disk. If you try to brute-force the algebra without visualizing it first, you will run out of time! 📐👇 Here is the ultimate step-by-step breakdown: 1️⃣The Hyperbola: Use the equation x²/16 - y²/9 = 1 to find its eccentricity (e1 = 5/4). This locks our foci exactly at (5, 0) and (-5, 0). 2️⃣The Ellipse: We are told the ellipse passes through those exact same foci! This instantly tells us the ellipse's semi-major axis is a = 5. 3️⃣The Connection: Since e1 * e2 = 1, we know the ellipse's eccentricity is 4/5. Use this to find b² = 9. Now we have our perfect ellipse equation: x²/25 + y²/9 = 1. 4️⃣The Chord: A chord passing through (0, 2) parallel to the x-axis is just the horizontal line y = 2!
