Partly because I had such a fantastic mathematics teacher but also because it was the first time I encountered mathematics in an entirely different form. You grow up learning about numbers on a number line… 1, 2, 3, … and so on. If there’s one number line, this usually means one dimension. As you go through school, you also learn about two dimensions - just imagine trying to draw a circle or square on a piece of paper - that’s a two dimensional shape. So, you have both an x coordinate and a y coordinate to describe any given point on that shape. But imaginary numbers break into two dimensions in an entirely new way. You are able to reveal some truly beautiful properties and equations in mathematics when doing so, and I released a video on this last week (Euler’s Identity - The Most Beautiful Equation in Mathematics). Comment ‘maths’ and I’ll send it to you! Note: i is the imaginary axis in the digram in this video, but it should really be denoted ‘Im’ to be consistent with mathematics.
