ICE DYE 101: Dye over ice vs. dye under ice - does it make a difference? This is one of my most frequently asked questions about tie dye… so I wanted to do a little experiment for you! Both of these shirts have been… ✨pre-soaked in soda ash for 20 minutes ✨spin dried until damp ✨ tied up before putting in the bins ✨batched for about 40 hours before washout (you only really need 24 hours, I was just busy) The outcome… 🌈Dye over ice: came out a little bit more melty with more color splits, but the colors are slightly more muted 🌈Dye under ice: gave more saturated colors with less depth and color splits In this case - the two shirts came out pretty similar. In other colorways, this may not always be the case! Each procion dye color has it’s own unique set of behaviors so the outcome is different with every colorway. If you’re new here, it’s nice to meet you! I use ice to dye clothing and make VERY unique designs and I pride myself on curated color combinations! The key with ice dyeing is that we leave a lot of control of the design in the ice cubes’ hands. We always get to choose the colors but every time you dye, you are guaranteed different patterns. And ice dye may look easy, but it’s very different. Because you’re using dry dye on ice, where liquid dye would make one color, dry dye separates and creates more colors in your item (ie green is made of blue and yellow, Black and grey are made of almost every primary pigment), if you don’t want a muddy mess, you need to know what colors do what! Tix on Hoamsy via bio 🎟️ Details: ✨Ice dying is a watercolor effect to make a unique, ethereal, intricate dye that can never be remade! ✨You will be provided with a variety of items to choose from to Ice dye (canvas totes, tea towels. bandanas, or small tapestries). ✨Each person will make 2 items. ✨It is also encouraged that you bring your own additional item to dye, we love to repurpose and renew old or stained items! ✨You will also have the option to take home your dye same day- in a closed container that I can provide. ✨Preferred method of items: I keep them home to wash myself and you can retrieve at a later date. As these dyes do need to sit for 24-48 hours and can be a messy wash out. ✨Things to note: - We are working with Powder Dyes, masks, aprons and gloves will be required and provided. -Reminder that this dye is for clothing, so make sure you’re not wearing your Sunday best please. - If you bring an item to dye (would love if you did, it’s included in this ticket) the item needs to be 80-100% natural fabric. Ex: Cotton, Linen, Rayon, Modal. Think of an old light colored t shirt. ✨Whether it’s your first time dyeing or you have some experience this workshop gives you everything you need to achieve the magic of ice dying!
