On March 14th, an executive order defunded the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services), which helps fund state and local libraries. Now, it’s up to us to save them.

Additionally, a coalition of 21 state attorneys general have also filed suit against the Trump administration for cutting the IMLS as well as other federal organizations. These attorneys generals are saying Trump‘s unilateral executive orders dismantling these organizations are illegal.

You can help! Call and email your state representatives. Sign the petitions! Use your libraries! Share this content because it is not breaking through to the general news media. My parents are news junkies and they hadn’t heard a peep about this until I told them. Get the word out, and save our libraries!

KOSince its inception, the Kickapoo Tribal Library in McLoud, Oklahoma has had to jump over multiple hurdles: bad weather slowed facility preparations, and now the Trump administration is pulling funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Rural and tribal libraries — like the Kickapoo one — can be reliant on federal dollars for operations. Library director Tassey Beeson said losing IMLS funding meant her library was out $100,000.
Beeson says she is trying to stay positive. She’s celebrating her library’s move to a new building and plans to host canning classes in its kitchen this summer. She is also actively seeking other sources of funding and making frugal decisions wherever possible.

LOCincinnati museums are bracing for cuts to a major source of funding.
President Trump signed an executive order to take money from the Institute Of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Some of the exhibits you've seen at the Contemporary Arts Center, the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, and the Children's Museum have been funded by IMLS grants.
The zoo said that the awards fund its research and has allowed them to renovate the Wings of The World enclosure. It currently has three active grants and wonders if they'll be honored.
Some of the funding that makes these galleries possible could soon be gone. The Cincinnati Museum Center said that IMLS grants help ideas get off the ground. In 2023, the museum center won $250,000 to create an indigenous peoples exhibit that's slated to open next year.
"IMLS' support doing that allows us to kind of get that gallery going and show something to donors [and] to supporters who want to see that vision become a reality, but someone has to get that started," said Cincinnati Museum Center Vice President of Marketing and Communications Cody Hefner.
Hefner said that the grants are highly competitive. Applicants have to prove how the money will educate the public.
"It's not just a blank check or a blank project. It is a very specific goal and a very specific purpose. The IMLS funds and presents these grants, and it's not something that happens every year," Hefner said.
The Contemporary Arts Center relies on a triennial grant that funds roughly 31% of its teen programs. Carolyn Hefner said that at-risk children can get paid internships, meet mentors, and get job training through the CAC.
"We're going to have to scale back our free teen programs without the support through Museums for America. That means that we will have to shift to finding additional dollars to replace that," said Contemporary Arts Center Chief of External Affairs Hefner.
In 2024, the IMLS gave out $294 million. That's about 0.004% of the federal budget.
