THLa Doncella, also known as the Maiden of Llullaillaco, is one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in South America. Her body was discovered in 1999 near the summit of the Llullaillaco volcano on the border of Argentina and Chile, at an altitude of more than 6,700 meters. The extreme cold and dry conditions naturally preserved her remains with extraordinary detail.
She was approximately 15 years old at the time of her death and lived during the Inca Empire, around the 15th or early 16th century.
Archaeological evidence suggests that she was part of a ritual known as capacocha. This was a ceremonial practice in which selected children were offered to the gods. These individuals were not random victims. They were carefully chosen, often from noble or respected families, and were considered pure and spiritually significant.
Studies of her hair and body indicate that her diet changed in the months before her death, becoming richer and more refined. This supports the idea that she was prepared for an important ritual role.
Unlike many other ancient remains, her body shows no signs of trauma. Researchers believe she died from exposure after being left on the mountain, likely in a sedated or weakened state.
Today, La Doncella is preserved in a controlled environment in Argentina, where she continues to provide valuable insight into Inca culture, ritual practices, and high-altitude archaeology.
