TH🫁 INCENTIVE SPIROMETER – NCLEX HIGH YIELD
An incentive spirometer is a respiratory device used to encourage slow, deep breathing. It helps expand the lungs, improve ventilation, and prevent post-operative pulmonary complications such as atelectasis.
📌 Common Indications:
✔ Post-operative patients (especially chest & abdominal surgery)
✔ Prolonged bed rest or immobility
✔ Patients at risk for lung collapse
✔ To improve oxygenation and secretion clearance
📌 How to Use:
1️⃣ Sit upright and hold the device correctly
2️⃣ Exhale normally
3️⃣ Seal lips tightly around the mouthpiece
4️⃣ Inhale slowly and deeply to raise the indicator
5️⃣ Hold breath for 3–5 seconds
6️⃣ Exhale slowly
7️⃣ Repeat about 10 times every hour while awake
⚠️ Contraindications Include:
• Untreated pneumothorax
• Active hemoptysis
• Inability to follow instructions
• Recent upper airway/facial surgery
• Severe respiratory distress or uncontrolled pain
