If you are following the 21-day journey to hatching Landrace hatching eggs that were shipped to me, we are at “lockdown “ when the eggs stopped being turned to allow the chick to position itself to hatch. Upon candling, these three were removed because of stunted development or no development at all. Performing an “eggtopsy “ allows assessment of the contents inside the egg that can give very helpful information to troubleshoot by looking for patterns or cause for problems. For example, there wasn’t a problem with a detached air cell because all three had the air cell right where it should be on the rounded, blunted end. Two had development but stopped within days for some reason. A lot of things could be the cause; rough shipping and handling, temperature or humidity fluctuation, eggs stored too long, nutritional deficiencies etc. Shipped hatching eggs notoriously have issues of air cells being dislodged and have lower hatch rates so this wasn’t totally unexpected. #hatchingeggs #landrace #landracebreed #swedishflowerhen #shetlandchickens #swedishblackhen #incubatingeggs #incubating #rarechickenbreeds #detachedaircell #embryology #incubatingissues #embryology #eggtopsy #lovelearning #lovetolearn #Ölandsk #hedemora

What a wonderful welcome home tonight. 6 beautiful Orpington chicks and the remaining 4 eggs pipped in our Brinsea Maxi 24 Ex Connect. The incubator fits 24 hens eggs, but we incubated 10 eggs with all 10 growing to term! Normally, on hatch day, we wouldn't leave an incubator, but the Brinsea Connect models send alerts to our phones if the temperature or humidity drops, so we would know if there are any problems. We were happy to go out to a local quiz night with friends. Coming home to these little squeakers was lovely! So now 11 are in the incubator and we will do our best to maintain the temperature and humidity in order to create the perfect incubation conditions. Chicken eggs take just 21 days to hatch, so hatching day should be the evening of the 14th March and possibly for a few days after that.
