FRin 2001, rock and roll was supposed to be dead.
nu-metal was on the radio. boy bands ruled mtv. teen pop was selling 10 million records a week. the rock magazines were covering eminem. critics had been writing rock's obituary for two years straight.
then five guys from manhattan changed everything.
the strokes had been playing dingy new york clubs for two years. they wore leather jackets and skinny jeans before anyone called them indie. their lead singer julian casablancas sang into a microphone bus through a fuzz pedal so his voice sounded like an old radio.
they recorded their debut album in a basement studio in late 2000. it cost almost nothing. they wanted it to sound like 1977 — the velvet underground, television, the ramones — and they got it.
the album was called "is this it." rolling stone called it "the most anticipated rock album of the year before anyone had heard a note of it." it was supposed to be released in the us on september 25, 2001.
then the planes hit the towers.
the album included a song called "new york city cops." the chorus went: "new york city cops … they ain't too smart." the band watched the nypd run into the towers. they watched dozens of officers die trying to save people.
they pulled the song.
the us release got delayed to october 9. they replaced "new york city cops" with a new track, "when it started." the european version still has the original.
when "is this it" came out, it didn't just chart. it ignited an entire movement. the white stripes. the libertines. arctic monkeys. interpol. yeah yeah yeahs. franz ferdinand. all of them have admitted, on record, that the strokes opened the door.
rock and roll wasn't dead. it had just been waiting for someone to pick it back up.
11 tracks. 35 minutes. one of the most influential debut albums ever made.
