“My childhood was elegant homes, tree-lined streets, the milkman, building backyard forts, droning aeroplanes, blue skies, picket fences, green grass, cherry trees. Middle America as it’s supposed to be. But on the cherry tree there’s this pitch oozing out – some black, some yellow, and millions of red ants crawling all over it. I discovered that if one looks a little closer at this beautiful world, there are always red ants underneath. Because I grew up in a perfect world, other things were a contrast”.

Roy Orbison initially denounced the use of ‘In Dreams’ in BLUE VELVET but later praised Lynch’s vision: “I was mortified because they were talking about the ‘candy coloured clown’ in relation to a dope deal… I thought, ‘What in the world…?’. But later, when I was touring, we got the video out and I really got to appreciate what David gave to the song, and what the song gave to the movie – how it achieved this otherworldly quality that added a whole new dimension to In Dreams“.

March 5, 1936 - November 7, 2021
Dean Stockwell was a Hollywood lifer - a child actor who appeared in films like "Gentleman's Agreement" and "The Boy with Green Hair" in the 1940s, then reinvented himself as an adult character actor in with roles in "Compulsion," "Long Day's Journey Into Night," and “Paris, Texas.”
But it was David Lynch who gave Dean one of his most unforgettable roles - the mysterious Ben in "Blue Velvet.”
In this clip from "Mysteries of Love” (produced for the "Blue Velvet" DVD) the late Dennis Hopper talks about Dean's brilliance as an actor, and the specific choices he brought to the character.
Dennis and Dean were longtime friends and acting contemporaries who shared a deep bond. Dean helped Dennis get sober, and their friendship endured for decades.
Later Dean Stockwell became best known for his lead role on “Quantum Leap,” but for David Lynch fans he’ll always be Ben lip-syncing to Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams,” creating a surreal moment of menace that defines the film.
Remembering Dean Stockwell today on what would have been his 90th birthday.
