BAI don’t love @inktober the way I used to. I loved the initiative, the sense of community, and the flood of amazing creativity. But lately it feels… off. Like the plot is missing.
1️⃣ So many wonderful drawtober prompts get snowed under by the sheer weight of Inktober.
2️⃣ It feels more like a pageant than a practice space, showcasing the picture-perfect rather than the joy of learning together.
3️⃣ The spotlight often falls on certain styles, which makes me fear people bend their art to fit what’s “seen,” not what they actually want to draw.
(4️⃣ And let’s be real, the all-or-nothing mentality? It can feel like failure if you don’t make it. I’ve felt that before, even though art shouldn’t be something you can fail at.)
So Ellen, you say, why still participate? Because social media loves trends, and art accounts don’t live in a vacuum. I’ll join in, but hopefully as an example: a more open mentality that shows anyone who loves art can connect, share, and create. Perfect or not.

Here is another super easy pattern to draw or doodle whenever you’ve got a pen in your hand and too many thoughts in your head. It’s super meditating to draw and I highly recommend giving it a try! It also has this cool illusion effect once it’s finished🪄

CHFinally completed my 30 day draw everyday sketch challenge😭
This challenge was so fun and so stressful all at the same time, I really encourage anyone else who wants to improve and become more consistent to try this out!
Here are some common questions I want to address
1.) how did you get so good at anatomy?
A. Practice and attention to where you place your lines! When first starting I didn’t know anything about anatomy honestly you can do so much without learning it, the key is figuring out proportions. I always like to compare the distance different points of the body are from one another for example if the model’s shoulder and foot are vertically parallel from each other then u know the general placement of the foot and can use other distances to further compare how far away the foot might be from the shoulder
2.) what materials should I start with?/ should use?
A. U rlly don’t need high quality expensive materials. When starting out all I used was a mechanical pencil I found under my middle school bench (which I still use and love) it’s a matter of mastering that medium and also having fun trying new ones as well! I love to use micron pens, graphite (2B-3B), copic markers and I’ve just started to play with color pencils. I’ve linked all the products I use in my bio!
3.) how do I stay consistent?
A. Set specific goals for yourself. Rather than say you are going to draw more this year and have a vague goal in mind with no explanation of how, create smaller, specific, tangible goals. I honestly used to sketch less than once a week but once I told myself I’m going to sketch for 30 days straight, I set a standard that I wanted to meet. So when asking yourself how do I stay consistent come up with a list then do the things you listed down. This holds you accountable since these solutions are a clearer answer to that question.

(Yes I’m aware I accidentally stopped numbering after 2… me and numbers just don’t do well together 😂)
I always struggle with wanting to doodle or sketch in my sketchbook but not knowing where to start. These five exercises can help you get rid of the fear of starting. And then you can go crazy from there if you want!
There are no rules. If you decide to do a continuous line drawing of the tree in the park that you are sitting at and then you want to make the background in a traditional way then so be it! Just have FUN with it and let it be an avenue to help you just begin. And luckily in the process these doodle can help you get better at drawing over time.
It does take time. So be patient and enjoy the process. Practice makes progress 💛
