Healthy soil tips for raised bed gardeners. Soil isn’t just dirt. It’s a living system made up of microbes, fungi, worms, and organic matter that actually feeds your plants. Getting good germination rates is both an art and a science. There's a lot of good information out there. Some of it you just have to learn by experience. You can ask Google 😆 which seeds benefit from cold stratification. Or you can check out my website for a free printable version of the cold stratification chart, or get all the details on planning and tracking your garden in my book, The Homestead Garden Journal and Planner. Cold stratification can be done outside. Just beware of cats and free range poultry that might get into it. Or cunning little wild birds that may discover the fancy seed buffet that you have on display. 🤪 Hence the mesh covers! #seedstarting #gardentips #growyourown #medicinalplants #growingfromseed

The part of gardening most people skip… soil health. 🌱 Before I ever expect seeds to grow, I try to give the soil what it needs first. This weekend looked like weeding, loosening beds with the broadfork, and direct sowing peas, arugula, radishes, and carrots — all the good cool-season staples. Once everything was in, I watered the beds with @biogrowth_organics Catalyst soil conditioner + microbial/enzymatic stimulant to help wake up the soil biology and support strong root development from day one. Think of it as something that supports the soil ecosystem, not something that directly feeds the plant. Healthy soil really does set the tone for everything that follows — better germination, stronger plants, and less stress later in the season. In the next few weeks, I’ll feed these seedlings (and soil) with an organic fertilizer like a fish emulsion, to provide a jumpstart of nutrients. Can’t believe the first seeds of 2026 are planted! 🤞🏼🌿🌷

Part 2 of our soil blocking series! This is my favorite mix to ensure the block hold together well without crumbling. Soil blocking is a seed-starting method where you compress a moistened mix into firm cubes instead of using plastic cell trays, encouraging air-pruned roots, reduced transplant shock, stronger seedlings, and efficient space use for vegetable and flower starts. #gardening #homestead #seedstarting

👀Before you swipe — hear me out. Getting your soil tested might be the most important thing you ever do for your garden. If you’re starting from scratch and have zero idea what soil health even means, that’s exactly why this matters. You need to know what’s in your soil before you can do anything else. Before the soil journey. Before the amendments. Before any of it. And when you do test — sample from where you’re actually going to garden. Not the edge of the woods. Not along a path. The exact spot where you intend to put seed to soil. Because here’s the thing — if your soil is not alive, you’ve got some work ahead of you. But if it’s teeming with life? The possibilities for what you can grow this year are kind of endless. The worm will turn once you start understanding what’s actually happening beneath your feet. 🪱 And yes — even if your ground is frozen right now, you can still collect a sample and send it to your local cooperative extension or a mail-in lab. Spring prep starts now. 🌱 Have you ever tested your soil? Drop a yes or no below.

Unpopular opinion: Blindly adding 10-10-10 every season isn’t good gardening. It’s guessing. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are used at very different rates in your soil. Nitrogen moves in and out of soil very quickly, especially in raised beds. Phosphorus and potassium don’t. They are used very slowly , so over time they build up. So when you keep adding a “balanced” fertilizer year after year without testing, you’re not balancing anything — you’re gambling. And sometimes that gamble shows up as plants that struggle… even though you’re doing “all the right things.” A soil test costs less than a few bags of fertilizer, and only needs to be done every 3 years or so. Add what’s actually missing. Build your soil with compost, shredded leaves, and organic matter over time. Stop guessing. Start testing Do you test your soil before you fertilize? #soilhealth #homegarden #raisedbedgardening #organicgardening #growyourownfood

Time to sow your herb and flower seeds that take 8–10 weeks to germinate! 🌱 Dig a little deeper than what’s on the seed packet to support optimal germination. Each seed has its own needs, so a little research goes a long way! Some seeds do best sown on the soil surface, while others benefit from stratification or scarification. These early seeds germinate best with soil temperatures of 60–80°F.
