The infographic highlights 20 garden insects that are essential for a healthy ecosystem and should not be crushed because they act as natural pest controllers, pollinators, or decomposers. While many people view insects primarily as pests, roughly 95% to 98% of garden insects are actually beneficial. Crushing these "good bugs" can disrupt the natural balance of your garden, potentially leading to larger infestations of actual pests. Why You Should Never Crush These Insects These beneficial organisms are grouped into four main categories based on their roles: Natural Predators: Insects like the Seven-spot Ladybird (eats up to 100 aphids a day), Green Lacewing, and Violet Ground Beetle hunt harmful pests like aphids, slugs, and cutworms. Pollinators: Essential for fruit and flower production, this group includes the Buff-tailed Bumblebee, Red Mason Bee, and Tawny Mining Bee. Parasitoids: The Giant Ichneumon Wasp and other Parasitoid Wasp lay their eggs inside pests like wood-boring beetles or aphids, eventually killing them from the inside. Decomposers: Creatures like the Woodlouse and Springtails break down dead organic matter into nutrient-rich humus, improving soil quality. Key Garden Helpers from the Image Insect Primary Garden Benefit Ladybird Consumes massive amounts of aphids and mites.HoverflyAdults pollinate; larvae are voracious aphid eaters. Earwig Clears aphids and mites at night (though they can be nuisance pests in high numbers).Common Centipede A fast predator that feeds on slug eggs and vine weevil larvae. Glow-wormTheir larvae specifically feed on slugs and snails.Black Garden Ant Helps aerate the soil and disperses seeds. Using broad-spectrum pesticides often kills these beneficial insects along with the pests, creating a cycle of dependency on chemicals. Instead, gardeners are encouraged to "discover, not destroy" to let these natural allies manage the environment. One of the lesser-known giants of the insect world. 🎥 from @guilhermemetter (follow for plenty more amazing wild nature) The male Imperious Sawyer (Enoplocerus armillatus), also called the giant longhorn beetle, is among the largest beetles in South America. Some individuals stretch nearly 5 inches (12.7 cm) long, not even counting those enormous antennae. Those long, sweeping feelers aren’t just for show. Longhorn beetles use them to navigate bark, detect chemicals in the air, and locate potential mates across the forest. As larvae, they spend years tunneling through dead or dying wood, quietly recycling fallen trees back into the ecosystem. By the time the adults emerge, the rainforest has already been reshaped by their hidden work. A giant that spends most of its life… in the dark heart of a tree. 🌲Link in bio for your free Nature Wolf newsletter. Your calming, monthly dose of nature, news, and wisdom. 👉 @TheNatureWolf 🐺

An insect so large, its wings sound like a helicopter. The elephant beetle or Megasoma elephas, is an iconic rhinoceros beetle species originating across Central and South America. In recent years, they have become popular breeds throughout the beetle rearing industry internationally as well. Despite their heavy build, these incredible beetles are still able to take flight. Like a living transformer, they unlock their elytra and stretch out their wings. Flying can only be sustained for short periods of time, but is still an extraordinary ability nevertheless. As you guys know from my last video, yesterday we found a HARLEQUIN BEETLE!!! Acrocinus longimanus. It is one of my favorite insects of all time, that I have wanted to see forever. But the harlequin beetle came with a surprise: hiding under its elytra were many pseudoscorpions! They are sometimes phoretic, aka neutral relationship, and sometimes symbiotic. This may actually be a symbiotic relationship here, because large Cerambycids often have mites on them, so the pseudoscorps will live on them and eat off their parasites. What do you think? #entomology #harlequinbeetle
