THNew CBS News chief Bari Weiss pulled a “60 Minutes” piece about notorious El Salvadorian prison CECOT over the weekend. It appeared on CBS’ Canadian affiliate’s app anyway and quickly went viral online.
Before the segment became available online, CBS correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi sent an email rebuking Weiss’ decision to her colleagues. “In my view, pulling it now-after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one,” she wrote. “When it fails to air without a credible explanation, the public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship.”
Weiss then defended her decision to pull the segment, which painted the Trump administration in a negative light, to CBS staffers, saying “it did not advance the ball.” She also encouraged reporters to obtain a White House comment or interview before it airs, potentially, “next year.” She clearly didn’t anticipate GlobalTV airing it later that day.

We came together on June 1st to demand the 238 men the Trump administration disappeared to the CECOT mega-prison in El Salvador be released.
When the Trump administration announces that some people are not deserving of due process, there is no longer due process for any of us.
The rise of authoritarianism is predicated on the erosion of democratic norms and constitutional protections. We are witnessing them being systematically disregarded and denied.
To disappear our immigrant family and friends, the regime erodes and eliminates due process.
When we resist, they deny our First Amendment right to protest. When we insist on standing up for our families and our principles, they call in the military inching towards martial law. Each erosion of a constitutional right normalizes the erosion of the next one.
They are depending on our complacency and our internal division. And so, we unite and resist.
