SOIf you are new to intercession, do not let that intimidate you. Intercession is not for “super spiritual” people. It is for believers who are willing to stand in the gap and agree with God. You can start simple. And you can start today.
1) Intercession starts with relationship, not performance
Intercession is not you trying to impress God. It is you spending time with Him and letting His heart shape your prayers. Start with worship. Start with gratitude. Then pray from connection, not pressure.
Scripture: John 15:5
Tip: Before you pray for people, take 2 minutes to tell God you love Him and ask Him to lead your words.
2) You are not the Savior, you are the vessel
A beginner mistake is trying to carry people’s problems like they are yours to fix. Your job is to bring needs to God and trust His power. Do not become emotionally responsible for what only God can heal.
Scripture: 1 Peter 5:7
Tip: After you pray, release it out loud: “Lord, I give this to You. I trust You with the outcome.”
3) Pray the Word when you do not have the words
Intercession gets stronger when it is rooted in scripture. God’s Word gives you language, direction, and authority. When you feel stuck, open your Bible and pray what God already said.

4) Intercession is spiritual warfare, so expect resistance
If you decide to pray seriously, you will often notice distraction, discouragement, and fatigue. That does not mean you are doing it wrong. It means you are stepping into a fight. Stand firm anyway.
Scripture: Ephesians 6:12
Tip: Set a time limit at first. Even 10 minutes daily is powerful. Consistency matters more than intensity.
5) Intercession includes listening, not just talking
Many people pray, but they never pause. Intercession is also asking, “Holy Spirit, how should I pray?” Then listening for direction, scripture, or a burden He places on your heart.
Scripture: Romans 8:26. After you pray, sit in silence for 60 seconds. Write down any scripture, person, or instruction that comes to mind and test it by the Word.

PR1. Intercession requires ALL of you
Intercession is more than praying for someone in passing. It is choosing to spiritually step into the space between a person and their need.
In Scripture, we see this modeled powerfully, a well esteemed theologian describes intercession as “Holy Labor”. It is not passive! It is intentional.
To intercede effectively is to carry someone before God with compassion and consistency.
Many times, you feel the weight of what you are praying about, but that weight is an invitation to partner with God’s heart for that person.
2. Intercession shapes the intercessor first
Many people think intercession is mainly about changing circumstances. However, the main goal of prayer in any context is to change YOU first. Before it shifts situations, it refines you.
When you intercede, your heart begins to reflect God’s compassion. You grow in patience, love and sensitivity. The fruits of the Spirit begins to show!
Intercession stretches your faith beyond your own needs. It matures you because you are learning to desire God’s will for someone else just as deeply (and sometimes more than) you desire it for yourself.
3. Intercession is partnership with Christ’s ongoing work
Jesus is described in Scripture as one who intercedes. That means intercession did not end at the cross. It continues.
Apostle Paul writes to the church, asking them to Pray without ceasing!
When you intercede, you are aligning yourself with what Christ is already doing. It is not about convincing God to care. He already cares. It is about agreeing with His purposes and declaring His promises over someone else’s life.
The true mystery of intercession is that it pulls you out of self focus and into Kingdom focus. It is sacred responsibility. It is done in sercret, and God rewards this openly.

MATHIS IS WHY INTERCESSION MATTERS
The ministry of intercession is so powerful that even after Jesus Christ declared, “It is finished,” He did not stop interceding. Though redemption was completed, intercession continued. Jesus ascended and sat at the right hand of the Father, not to rest, but to pray.
He remembered what life was like as a man. He remembered false accusations. He remembered wicked systems. He remembered human weakness. He knew that if we were left without intercession, many would not finish strong. So He took advantage of the Father’s ear and began to pray for us, and He still intercedes for us.
Intercession is a better alternative to complaining; intercession is a better alternative to criticism. Intercession is a better alternative to bitterness and hatred.
