The day is nearly here! 🎊 Saturday the public will see the wreck of USS Monitor like never before. In September 2025, @northropgrumman’s Technology for Conservation team, along with scientists from NOAA and @stantec, deployed an AUV with an advanced sonar system, µSAS, to capture high-resolution imagery of the Monitor shipwreck site off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. According to Monitor National Marine Sanctuary Research Coordinator Tane Casserley, ""This is the first modern sonar survey that has provided this level of resolution of Monitor's hull remains and internal structure."" The survey captured fine-scale views of the wreck and surrounding debris field, as well as high resolution detail of components such as the vessel's armor belt and lower hull. Digital preservation tools like these allow researchers to track change over time while also helping the public visualize an iconic piece of American maritime history. ⚓️ These scans and more will be unveiled during a public event at @marinersmuseum in Newport News, Virginia on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 10:00 AM EST! Seeing with Sound 🎶 How do you protect a world you can’t see? You map it with sound. 🗺️ The Reality: Today’s fieldwork takes us off the shore and onto the deck. To truly understand our oceans floors we use MBES (Multibeam Echosounder) technology. What is MBES? Unlike a traditional depth sounder that sends one single beam straight down, an MBES emits a wide, fan-shaped "swath" of hundreds of simultaneous beams. As the boat moves, it 'mows the lawn,' painting a high-resolution 3D picture of the seafloor. Like the scan shown of the wreck of RMS Quetta which lies in Torres Strait I conducted whilst serving on a RAN hydrographic ship. Why it’s a game-changer for Oceans of Insight: Mapping of Kelp Forests: We don't just see depth; we will see texture. Allowing identification of where rocky reefs end and sand begins, helping to track the health of the Great Southern Reef. Backscatter Data: The 'echo' that comes back tells us if the bottom is soft mud, hard rock, or dense seagrass. Spotting the Details: MBES is so precise it can reveal underwater caves, ancient shipwrecks, and even 'bubble plumes' from the seafloor. Using MBES allows us to create a digital twin of our coastline. This baseline data is vital—if a storm or a heatwave hits, we can re-map the area and see exactly how the underwater landscape has physically changed. The Takeaway: Science is about upgrading our senses.
