As an autistic adult who was constantly called “difficult”… hearing someone ✨politely✨ say what I’ve been trying to communicate my whole life was WILD! 🤯 So many of us need to ask LOTS of questions in order to piece together details from the bottom up. And sometimes, directly saying, “I’m not challenging your authority, I just want to understand…” can be REALLY helpful. 💖 Clarity is kindness and for some people, a little extra context can really go a long way! #autistic #autism #neurodivergent #autismawareness #autismacceptance

Are you being ableist without realising?! Welcome back to another episode of Disability Education 101! I’m Chronically Jenni, and I’m here to tell you all the things you never learned about disability. Ableism isn’t just someone saying a slur or blocking a disabled parking bay; it shows up in loads of different ways, and not all of them are obvious. So, let’s break down the different types of ableism you might come across: Systemic ableism is built into structures ,like inaccessible housing, long waits for benefits, or workplaces that don’t accommodate disabled people. Interpersonal ableism is the stuff people say or do, like ‘you don’t look disabled’ or questioning someone’s mobility aid. Internalized ableism is when we start to believe those messages, feeling like a burden or trying to hide our needs. Benevolent ableism sounds kind, but it’s still harmful, like calling us inspirational for just existing, or making choices for us instead of with us. Invisibility-based ableism is when people doubt your disability because it’s not visible and assume that means it’s not real. Medical ableism happens in healthcare when symptoms are dismissed, everything gets blamed on one diagnosis, or our quality of life is assumed to be poor. It’s when they prioritise a ‘cure’ over support and management Cultural ableism is all around us, in film, TV, and media that either leaves us out or only shows harmful stereotypes like portraying disabled people as villains, victims or inspirational tropes. And structural erasure is when disabled people aren’t considered at all, no ramps, no captions, no access. Ableism can be loud and obvious, or subtle and baked into everyday life, but the more we name it, the more we can challenge it. I have been getting so many ignorant, ableist comments lately.😞🤷🏻💔 Ableism is the discrimination or oppression of people with disabilities, whether intentional or unintentional. It's based on the belief that people with disabilities are less capable, less valuable, or should have less autonomy than others. Do you encounter ableism in your life? How do you deal with it?💚💙💜❤️ #autistic #adhd #ableism

I’ve said things online that didn’t land the way I hoped. At times, I’ve explained things poorly, or incompletely. And I’ve even spoken without fully understanding something.🫣 Online, you can spend years showing people who you are and when one thing feels off…people say: “You’ve been horrible all along. We finally caught you!” My experience is amplified because of the size of my platform, but the core feeling is the same for autistic people everywhere: being misunderstood can feel devastating 💔 So the takeaway is: if something doesn’t sit right, ask for clarification. 🙏🏼 Clarity is kindness. #autism #autistic #neurodivergent #autismacceptance #autismawareness

‘So many people’ are getting diagnosed bc the healthcare system has failed GENERATIONS of people.  it’s not easy to get diagnosed, so anyone who has been, is because they have autism, ADHD, or any other diagnosis (it’s not as easy to trick professionals as people think) which means: ⭐️ People have been left struggling with no answers as to why for YEARS, sometimes the majority of their life ⭐️People have often had to wait till they got so unwell they needed psychiatric admissions before  a ND diagnosis has even been considered.  ⭐️ parents haven’t realised their ND traits until their CHILDREN have been assessed Additionally, a lot of ND people do not even claim benefits due to how tricky it is to apply, and how many get denied We should be angry that it’s taken THIS long for people to get diagnosed, not angry at the people getting diagnosed - the healthcare system is the problem.

Internalized ableism happens when we begin to believe discriminatory societal beliefs about disability, which turn into negative beliefs about ourself [save if you’re working through your own internalized ableism] I myself struggled immensely with internalized ableism my whole life and have only in the last 2 years been able to recognize the beliefs as not my own Recognizing the innate humanity and love and worthiness of ALL humans has helped me shift perspectives We are worthy no matter what our bodies can or can’t do Thoughts? P.s. want to work with me 1:1? DM to schedule a free 15-min consult 💌. I specialize in supporting you to live in harmony with your body, embrace your authentic self, access daily joy, and cultivate deep self-trust #chronicallythinking #invisibleillnessawareness #potsie #heds #endo #healingmindset #internalizedableism
