CUARE PRISONS OBSOLETE (2003)
Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944, Davis has spent the last forty-odd years active in numerous organisations challenging prison-related repression.
Her advocacy on behalf of political prisoners, and her alleged connection to the Marin County courthouse incident in 1970, led to three capital charges, sixteen months in jail awaiting trial, and a highly publicised acquittal in 1972.
In “Are Prisons Obsolete?” Davis advocates for the abolition of the prison system, examining the evolution of carceral systems from their earliest incarnation to the modern prison industrial complex. Davis argues that incarceration fails to reform those in prison, instead systematically profiting from the exploitation of the huge population of black and brown prisoners.
The book explores potential alternatives to the prison system that could transform the justice system from a punitive instrument of control and retribution into a tool capable of changing lives for the better.
