@advicewitherin 😅 Why are the simplest questions often the hardest to answer!? [Comment or DM “INTERVIEW101” for resources!] Ugh, I hate how this question is low-key lazy. Like isn’t the whole interview about why you should hire me? Of course, my positive side is saying, “no, this is a great opportunity to give your elevator pitch + set the tone of the interview!” That’s why I developed this 3-part method for answering this question: 1. Hard Skills (technical aspects of the job you know how to do—softwares, processes, systems, certifications, trainings, education, etc.) 2. Soft Skills (personality, character & interpersonal strengths—proactive, collaborative, organized, leadership, etc.) 3. Unique Offering (what do YOU bring to the table that no one else does? This can be a great way to spin not directly-relevant past experience as a strength) ‼️ But the MOST important thing? Repeat the job description back to them. 👨🏻‍💻 ESPECIALLY if you’re interviewing with a recruiter (as opposed to someone from your future department). ✔️ Recruiters aren’t experts in what you do, so they listen for keywords to check boxes The job description is a roadmap! Use it to design your answers. You got this! 👏🏼 #job #jobinterview #intern #interviewtips

Pretend like I am interviewing you and pause the video and practice your answer. It’s even better if you record yourself and watch it back. The more you do it, the better you get.

❌A big mistake people make when preparing for interviews is they never practice. They think about their answers, and they might even write them down, but they never practice getting it out of their head.

Also, whatever you do, DO NOT write a script. Inevitably you will not remember it word for word and it will throw you off. It is better to practice so you can answer questions organically and not try to recite a script.

So what is it so you don’t find yourself “not successful” again? This is the 3 point check and it’s how I prepare my students and clients to show up with confidence: 1️⃣ Do your homework! Research the company, the role, and the people interviewing you. Understand their mission, values, and what they actually do so you can speak their language. Bonus points for learning where their business name came from 😉 2️⃣ Have your stories ready. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure examples of times you’ve solved problems, worked under pressure, or achieved something you’re proud of. This turns vague answers into memorable ones. If you’re a student with no real work experience, take an example from school. Maybe it was a tough team project gone wrong - use it! 3️⃣ Own the room. 📸 Confident body language is non-negotiable. Sit tall, maintain steady eye contact with each interviewer, and treat it like a conversation, not an interrogation. These are just a few of the skills I teach in School of Life workshops and in my online video library, from how to make a strong first impression to navigating workplace etiquette. Want to make sure you (or your students) are interview ready? Email michelle@schooloflife.ie or head to the link in my bio to book a workshop or purchase the full online library today.

You think it’s simple..until they actually ask you: “Tell us about yourself,” and your mind goes blank. Here are 3 reasons why it’s a hard question: 1️⃣ It’s open-ended question and that’s intimidating. There’s no clear direction, time limit, or structure. Most candidates aren’t sure how much to share or where to start. 2️⃣ Candidates don’t tailor their story to the role. Many people give a generic summary of their career instead of connecting their background to why they’re a strong fit for this job. 3️⃣ Getting the tone and energy right is tricky. Too formal, and you sound rehearsed. Too casual, and you sound unprepared. Add nerves, and candidates often overdo or underdo their delivery. The sweet spot is sounding confident, concise, and authentic which takes PRACTICE. So before your next interview, practice that first minute. Keep it relevant. Bring the right energy. Show your impact. That’s how you turn a blank moment into a powerful first impression. I hope this helps. #jobinterview #interviewtips #hiring #jobsearch #jobinterviewquestions

Job interview preparation starts before you walk into the room. Most people fail interviews not because they lack qualifications, but because their communication skills let them down. Here's how to fix that: Master the "Tell me about yourself" question. This is your moment to connect, not recite your resume. The framework: Tell a story that links your origin to the role you want. Example for an engineering position: "When I was young, I'd take apart my dad's car radios. Never could put them back together. But that curiosity about how things work? That's what drives me as an engineer today." See the difference? You're creating human connection first, then transitioning into professional context. Interview success formula: 1. Prepare your origin story 2. Connect it to the position 3. Make it personal and memorable 4. Lead with emotion, follow with logic The best candidates don't just answer questions. They make interviewers feel something. What's your go to interview story?
