The latest IPCC report confirms much of what we already know - that we need drastic and real action if we are to mitigate the effects of climate change. However, it also includes a whole chapter on another set of issues previously unaddressed - the role of people in this change. Ultimately, the changes we all need to secure the future of the world we all share are going to come from each and every one of us working together in our own ways, despite our differences. Climate change has been shown to impact women, BIPOC and marginalized individuals more than any other, so what good are solutions to climate change if they only further that othering? Whats the point of moving from a fossil fuel economy to green energy if the way that we do it continues to prey upon disenfranchised communities around the world through the same patriarchal colonial systems that created climate change in the first place? Us humans created this mess through class structures, racism, bigotry and division, and that is not the way we are doing to solve it. The only way we’re going to get through any of this, is together. IPCC Real My Critiques of IPCC Report and how we can turn doom into action. The IPCC that human activity is causing climate change. Blaming overall human activity fails to acknowledge the role of colonization, capitalism and neoliberalism in climate change. Actually, Indigenous communities have existed in Harmony with the earth for millennia. 71% of emissions global are caused by 100 companies and it is BIPOC peoples that face the brunt of it. The IPCC says that There will be increase frequency of uprecedented wet and dry weather extremes. Limiting global warming to close to 1.5 degrees - 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels can only happen immediate, large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and movement towards land and sea carbon sinks. We need to acknowledge that until the Global North started feeling the repurcussions of climate change, there was wasn’t interest in climate action from corporations or individuals. What can we do? Instead of falling into the trap of climate doom, keep active hope, there is definitely time to take action and create a healthy thriving planet for all. Indigenous communities make up 5% of the earth but have stewarded all of it for millennia, we need to center BIPOC voices and follow in their footsteps. Hold these 100 companies and governments accountable for their emissions through petitions, emails etc. Wealth distribution from people and corporations to environmental justice orgs Support resistance movements to stop oil pipllines like Line 3, Cambo, and Indigenous forest conservation efforts. Spend time outdoors understanding and connecting with our earth Educate yourself and your community on actions we can take, volunteer and join climate justice organizations!
