Shinya Yamanaka is a Japanese stem cell researcher and Nobel Prize laureate. He was born on September 4, 1962, in Osaka, Japan. He developed a revolutionary method for generating stem cells from existing cells of the body. In 2006, he succeeded in identifying a small number of genes within the genome of mice that proved decisive in this process. When activated, skin cells from mice could be reprogrammed to immature stem cells, which, in turn, can grow into different types of cells within the body. In 2012, he and John Gurdon were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discovery that mature cells can be converted to stem cells. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are a type of stem cell that can be generated directly from adult cells. They have the ability to differentiate into any type of cell in the body, making them a powerful tool in regenerative medicine.
