The shoebill is an extraordinary-looking bird that lives in vast tropical swamps, reed-filled lakes, and slow-moving riverbanks of Africa, especially in Uganda, South Sudan, Zambia, and Tanzania, where dense vegetation helps it both hide and ambush its prey. It typically stands 110–140 centimeters tall, has a wingspan exceeding two meters, and shows gray-blue plumage; its most striking feature is the enormous, shoe-shaped bill with a hooked tip, perfectly adapted for gripping slippery fish and reptiles.
