AL4/17/2026 (Ithaca, NY) The Ithaca Commons is a pedestrian mall in downtown Ithaca, built in 1974 by closing several blocks of State Street to vehicle traffic as part of a downtown revitalization effort.
The Commons serves as the city’s central public space, hosting events such as the Ithaca Festival and Apple Harvest Festival, and is lined with shops, restaurants, and local businesses.
It was redesigned and reconstructed between 2013 and 2015, updating infrastructure, utilities, and public space features while maintaining its role as a pedestrian-only downtown corridor.

Ithaca is located south of Rochester and the last leg of the route takes you along the Finger Lakes, making this a beautiful drive!
𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀–
The first waterfall of our day trip, Buttermilk Falls can be easily viewed at the base of the parking lot entrance.
𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗯𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀–
The drive through Cornell Campus to Triphammer Falls was pretty cool. The view can be seen from the bridge.
𝗜𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀–
The most beautiful waterfalls in Ithaca, Ithaca Falls! You can view the waterfall on the side of the road however, we hiked about 150-ish yards to the base of the waterfall.
𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗯 𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀–
The cutest blocks of shops and restaurants. We stopped at The Yellow Deli and had a homemade vegetarian lentil soup with sourdough bread. Definitely worth the pit stop!
𝟲-𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲–
A hidden gem in Ithaca! Be sure to stop by at Cayuga Nature Center to check out a 6-story treehouse built in 2000 by students from Ithaca High School.
𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀–
The tallest free falling waterfall in the northeastern US. The trail is 3/4 miles to the base of the waterfall and the view was gorgeous, at any time of the year!

Ithaca, NY was just named No. 1 on CNN’s Travel 2025 list of Best Towns in America to visit!
It is a particular good spot for outdoor nature lovers as it’s surrounded by gorgeous waterfalls, numerous cideries and wineries, so many good local eats, and a wide variety of stay options for everyone’s style.
Here is a sample 1-day/night itinerary:
1️⃣ Drive to the Overlook at the Taughannock Falls and see this gorgeous view from above. @visitithaca
2️⃣ Drive 5 minutes to the base and park your vehicle ($10), then walk the .9 mile Gorge Trail. @nystateparks
3️⃣ Drive 5 minutes to the Cayuga Nature Center. Follow the hiking trail on the left side of the building to the 6-story Treehouse to explore! @cayuganaturecenter
4️⃣ Drive to the Finger Lakes Cider House (about a 14 minute drive) for lunch! Their cheese boards are delish, and pair perfectly with a cider flight, or grab a sandwich. Grab a seat outside if the weather is nice, or stay inside. @flxciderhouse

VIA Weekend in Ithaca — Our Cozy Getaway Guide!
If you’re planning a relaxing weekend trip, Ithaca is the place to be — filled with waterfalls, scenic trails, and charming downtown vibes. Here’s how our perfect weekend looked:
Friday:
• Checked into @thehotelithaca — highly recommend the patio rooms for stunning downtown views!
• Took a short walk to Ithaca Commons — just 2 mins from the hotel and packed with shops, restaurants & local charm.
• Ended the night with tacos at Old Mexico and desserts from Paris Baguette.
Saturday:
• Slept in and enjoyed a late breakfast at Social — turned into the perfect brunch.
• Took a scenic 40-min drive to Watkins Glen State Park. Though the main trail was closed, the hike to the Suspension Bridge was worth it!
• Stopped by a local winery (Castle Grinch) nearby for a quick tasting.
• Ended the night with dinner back at Social — because yes, it was that good.
Sunday:
• Breakfast at the hotel, then off to explore one last gem — Taughannock Falls. A peaceful and beautiful end to the trip before heading home.
Already dreaming of a summer visit back to the Finger Lakes region!
