ALThis was a super fun foodie experience during my time in Iwate. 🍜
In the city of Morioka, I tried Wanko Soba which involves eating soba noodles from small bowls.
You're waited on by a very attentive server who gives you bitesize portions of noodles one at a time in small bowls. As soon as you've finished one mouthful they present you with another. There's quite a lot of pressure to keep eating, although luckily it's delicious!
On the table next to us an 84 year old lady had 62 bowls of noodles, without breaking a sweat!
It's a traditional way of eating noodles in Morioka although there are various stories as to how it originated. One story is of a landowner who was having a festival on his land with a crowd of hundreds of villagers and the noodles were served in small portions/bowls to ensure everyone could have some.
I ate at Azumaya - it's a popular spot so book ahead to avoid disappointment.
