I joined two amazing tick scientists from the @odutickteam on a tick flag down in Norfolk, VA. We flagged this 🪲 off the top of some ferns next to a kids trail at a public park. 😣😣 This teeny tiny tick is a Ixodes scapularis, commonly known as a black-legged tick. And this nymph is the main culprit for spreading Lyme disease. Yes, that tiny little shithead. 🤯 In my family, we don’t mess around with ticks. My husband has chronic Lyme and we live in the DC area, where ticks are super common. Ticks crawl UP, they don’t fall from trees 🎄, which is why we partnered with @insectshield to create a line of tick-repellent socks 🧦that are EPA-registered and approved for use on all ages. Also made in USA. 🇺🇸 #ihateticks #lymeawareness

It’s tick bite prevention week 🧑‍⚕️🩺 Our @futurevetkidscamp attendees in Brisbane learnt how to identify the paralysis tick at the University of Queensland Vet school in Gatton. The Paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) is a species of tick that is found in Australia, and is known for its venomous bite that can cause paralysis in both animals and humans. Some characteristics to help identify the Paralysis tick include: ➡️ The Size: Paralysis ticks are relatively large compared to other tick species, with adult females growing up to 1cm in length when engorged with blood. ➡️ The Colour: The Paralysis tick has a yellow-grey to dark grey body with a darker band on the sides. The first and last part of the legs are brown with the second and third pair, more pale. ➡️ The Shape: The Paralysis tick has an pear-shaped body with an elongated mouthpart that is visible when viewed from above. ➡️ Location: The Paralysis tick is found mainly on the eastern coast of Australia, in areas with high humidity and dense vegetation, including bushland, forests, and coastal heath. ➡️ Behaviour: The Paralysis tick feeds on a wide range of mammals, including dogs, cats, and humans. They are most active during the warmer months of the year, typically from August to February. If you find a tick attached to your skin or your pet’s skin, it is important to remove it as soon as possible. This can be done using a tick twister or a tick removal tool. Another trick is cut a v shape out of a plastic teaspoon and use that to gently lift and twist the tick out (like a tick twister). 👩🏻‍⚕️ If you suspect that you or your pet may have been bitten by a Paralysis tick, seek medical attention immediately‼️ #dralisonshen #tickprevention #bondivet #petsofaustralia

May you feel every tick! Just a reminder, this is the adult black-legged tick (“deer tick”) season. After the summer lull, when hot, dry conditions dominate, the black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) become active again.  They’re very common in the spring (especially the nymphs), but their disappearance in the summer can create complacency, as we forget they’re back in the fall. Here in Maine, they can be a problem until the ground is blanketed in snow.  This species is a vector for a lot more than Lyme disease (as if that wasn’t enough). They can also carry: — anaplasmosis — babesiosis — Powassan virus disease (rare but VERY serious) They can also carry the alpha-gal carbohydrate that triggers alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) — the dreaded red meat allergy. Avani and I say, “May you feel every tick”! Part admonition, part prayer. We’ve become very sensitive to every little tickle and itch. We believe it’s always worth checking, even if its just a “phantom tick”. This diligence has saved us MANY times from REAL ticks. To us, its never worth dismissing.  A few years ago, my friend @lukestorey and his wife @iamalysoncharles reached out to ask if I’d contribute to her book Animal Power — all about the archetypal symbolism of animals. I wrote about ticks. I talked about how, in the modern world, we rarely have to fear large predators anymore, like bears or lions, and instead we have to deal with minuscule ones like ticks. Today, they’re one of the most significant threats on our landscape.  We’ve chosen not to use repellants or tuck our pants into our socks. Instead, we rely on diligence.  My recommendation — if you are in the outdoors regularly, check twice daily, naked in the mirror. In the morning and again at night. Look EVERYWHERE. Yes, even there! May YOU feel every tick!

A little too accurate 😪 We're seeing many critical tick cases coming through our emergency doors.  Ticks in Australia are present all year round, they are just more prominent in warmer months. There is no such thing as a tick season. Ixodes Holocylus- the paralysis tick, releases a toxin causing a ascending paralysis, cardiac toxicity and severe respiratory compromise. Paralysis tick envenomation is a life threatening disease. 🐶 What to look out for: You may notice a grey bodied tick (ranging in size) over your pets body. Clinical signs include: ▪️Hindlimb ataxia (wobbly back legs) progressing to hindlimb parlaysis ▪️Change in bark/meow ▪️Retching ▪️Increased respiratory rate/effort ▪️Vomiting. 🐱 You can remove the tick by taking forceps or your fingers to the base of the body and doing a pull motion. If you cannot remove the tick yourself, take your furbaby to your general practice veterinarian or emergency center to have the tick removed and your pet assessed. If clinicals signs of evenomation are present, treatment is required. This involves tick antiserum and intensive supportive care. In severe cases, pets may require ventilation due to their lungs fatiguing. Tick cases are touch and go, even patients who have mild symptoms can deteriorate rapidly. Pets die from tick paralysis. Paraysis ticks can be prevented with several products on the market.  Prevention is better than a cure 🧡 #animals #vet #vetsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #dogstagram #dogs #catsofinstagram #catstagram #instapet #pets #emergency #doctor #fyp #australia #funnyreels #comedy #joke #trend

#tique #arachnophobie #phobie #lesvideosdeloic #maladiedelyme

Meet the Western Black-Legged Tick Say hello to Ixodes pacificus, but seriously, no hugs. This little bloodsucker loves hanging out in Marin and Sonoma counties, lurking in tall grass and leaf piles like it’s their version of a coffee shop. They’re not here to make friends; they just want to hitch a ride on you and possibly share unwanted “souvenirs” like Lyme disease. #marin #sonoma #ticks #ixodespacificus #personalprotection #lymedisease
