93Did you know? Jabba the Hutt wasn’t originally meant to be a creature at all. In A New Hope, Jabba was first filmed as a human actor (Declan Mulholland) with the intention of replacing him later using stop-motion animation. Budget limits stopped that plan, so the scene was cut — and Jabba didn’t appear as his iconic slug-like self until Return of the Jedi.
What makes this unique is that the deleted scene was later restored using early CGI in the 1997 Special Edition, digitally replacing the human actor with the Hutt we know today. It became one of the earliest examples of a modern film using CGI to retroactively alter a decades-old scene.
So Jabba’s look wasn’t just a character decision — it reflects the evolution of filmmaking itself.
