The chilling line was improvised by Jack Nicholson during filming. It was a playful reference to Ed McMahon’s introduction of Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show—something Nicholson grew up hearing on TV. Director Stanley Kubrick loved unexpected spontaneity, but he was also known for his extreme perfectionism. In fact, the door-smashing sequence reportedly required around 60 takes (some crew members claim even more), and Nicholson used a real axe—something he was unusually skilled with because he had worked as a volunteer fire marshal!
Here’s the wild part: Kubrick originally had a prop department build a fake door, but Nicholson chopped through it too easily. They had to replace it with a sturdier one so the scene would look more intense and believable on camera.
During filming, Shelley Duvall’s terrified reactions were genuine—Kubrick pushed for emotional realism, and the long shooting schedule made the cast physically and emotionally exhausted. That raw energy is part of why the scene feels so real decades later.
