NAIf I knew then what I know now, I would’ve done things differently. He might still be with us. 🥺
This is a thought that haunts me. I couldn’t have known that he was sick, and I did explicitly ask if he was tested. I trusted the shelter and I regret that. If I could do it over, I’d immediately get him tested and we would be able to treat him sooner and possibly avoid how our story ended.
I’ve promised myself to always test new dogs that come into my home, regardless of what the shelter says (unless it’s the shelter that I’ve been working with for years and where my other dogs are from, I know I can trust their word 100%).
When I went to pick up our 3 chihuahua foster puppies, I thought of the day that I went to pick up Nugget. I was so excited. I’d been nagging Owen for a chihuahua and we had finally found one that he also liked. I loved him from the moment I met him, and he made me so happy every single day after that. I miss him so much. I think it’s no coincidence that the shelter we work with called me to pick up 3 chihuahua puppies shortly after his death. I think Nugget knew I needed those puppies to mend my heart a little and he sent them. They are not him, they don’t replace him in the least, but one of them kinda reminds of him. It’s messing with my mind a bit but it’s also healing my heart little by little. I’d give anything to go back to that day where I went to pick him up though. 🥺
