Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins reveals how working with Michael Jackson completely changed the way he approached music production. On The Almanac of Rap podcast, he explains that Michael was obsessed with unique sounds and textures anything that felt ordinary or “generic” immediately lost his interest.
Jerkins recalls how he had to rethink his entire creative process. Instead of relying on standard bass sounds or drum patterns, he started experimenting with unusual sources sampling motorcycles revving, metal objects in junkyards, and even industrial crane noises around New York City. If a sound had something distinctive what producers call “ear candy” it would catch Michael’s attention.
Michael even pushed him to record real-world sounds on a DAT recorder, sometimes sending him back out into the city to capture a specific noise he heard. According to Jerkins, if a track sounded too conventional, Michael would dismiss it immediately, referencing how he had already explored those ideas on classics like Billie Jean.
