Happy Birthday to the late Jit Samaroo, the internationally-renowned steelpan arranger, pannist, composer, & musician. 🇹🇹 He helmed the Amoco Renegades Steel Orchestra (BP Renegades) for 35 years as the band’s arranger, leading them to victory at Panorama a record-breaking 9 times, from 1982-1997! This included a historic hat-trick in 1995, 1996 & 1997 that made him the most successful arranger in the history of Panorama, until 2024 when this was broken by Leon “Smooth” Edwards of Trinidad All Stars. Born to a large Indo-Caribbean family in the Afro-Hispanic community of Lopinot, Jit was exposed to a variety of music, including Indian classical music, parang, & steelpan. His mother played the “dholak”, often used by Indo-Trinidadian women at weddings. After her sudden passing, he formed a parang band to keep his siblings together. His first instrument was the guitar, & he experimented with the steelpan, which was unusual as it was an Afro-Creole invention. By 14, Jit had mastered the tenor pan & was able to read, compose, & arrange music, eventually forming the Samaroo Jets Steelband with his siblings, winning local & international music festivals for over 30 years, & playing at the Hilton Hotel under Holly Betaudier. Samaroo’s talent led him to Amoco Renegades Steel Orchestra in 1971. His friend Bertrand Kellman was the tuner for both the Samaroo Jets, & Amoco Renegades. Kellman recommended Jit to them as an arranger & Jit won their respect & loyalty. Their repertoire included classical pieces, reggae & calypso, with Jit’s top calypsonian being Lord Kitchener. His style of arranging balanced all the instruments present in a steelband, instead of just the tenor sections. He was awarded the Hummingbird Medal of Merit (Silver) in 1987 & the Chaconia Medal (Silver) in 1995. In 2003, he was given an Honorary Doctorate from the UWI, before his death in January 2016. Pan Elders Steel Orchestra is the 2026 Panorama Medium Conventional Band champion. Playing in Position No. 6, the steelband performed the Burning Flames classic 'Magician - I Command You', scoring 289 points to take first place. Placing second was Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille with 284 points for their arrangement of 'Soft Man'. Pamberi Steel Orchestra came third with 278 points for 'The Fog'. Ten medium steelbands took part in Monday's final, dubbed 'Legacy Monday'. It was held at the Queen's Park Savannah instead of the Parade Grounds in Bacolet, Tobago, due to challenges on the sea bridge. The competition was free to the public.

Repost from @dominickalipersad • How Steelpan Started, as told by pan pioneer Oscar Pyle: Oscar Pyle, also known as "Bogart," was an iconic captain of the Casablanca Steelband in Belmont, Trinidad, during the 1940s and 1950s. He is regarded as a pioneering steelbandsman who played a crucial role in the early, tumultuous, and highly competitive era of steelpan. Pyle active in the era when the instrument was evolving from everyday objects like oil drums, buckets, and dustbins. He famously noted that the steelband was deeply rooted in politics, stating, "The steelband comes from the politics". The Medium Conventional Band Finals delivered pure excellence. 🥁🔥 Big congratulations to Pan Elders Steel Orchestra on securing their historic 7th title, with a commanding performance of “Magician (I Command You)” that showed exactly why consistency and craft matter. Respect to all ten bands who took the stage and carried the legacy of steelpan forward with pride and passion. The energy in the venue was next level, with strong performances by Verrse and Adana adding to the excitement and keeping the crowd fully locked in. Big thanks to Tobago House of Assembly as title sponsor for standing behind the culture and helping to make this celebration of steelband excellence possible. It was also great to have Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly, Mr. Farley Chavez Augustine, in attendance to support the movement, along with Secretary of the Division of Tourism, Antiquities and Creative Industries, Assembly Member Zorisha Hackett, and Assistant Secretary, Assembly Member Niketa Percy for their presence and continued support of the creative sector.
