The Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the largest fully functioning pipe organ in the world, based on the number of playing pipes, the number of ranks and its weight. The Wanamaker Organ is located within a spacious 7-story Grand Court at the John Wanamaker Store (originally Wanamaker’s and most recently Macy’s) and was played twice a day Monday through Saturday. Fun fact: Macy’s in downtown Philadelphia is home to the largest playable musical instrument in the world. The Wanamaker Organ was built for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. It was designed to be the world’s largest organ and built using the finest materials available, resulting in a $105,000 price tag (over $3 million today). It has nearly 30,000 pipes and is seven stories tall. After the World’s Fair, the organ sat in storage for five years until department store owner John Wanamaker bought it to display in his new Philadelphia store. The organ took two years to install and was first played on June 22, 1911 at the exact moment when England’s King George V was crowned. Macy’s purchased the Wanamaker building and its organ in 2005. And since 1948, 1917 Walnut Street — originally built as a mansion for John Wanamaker’s brother William — has been Theosophy’s Philly home base. Even if you’re not interested in the spooky stuff, the building itself is an architectural marvel inside and out: gargoyles, ornate plasterwork, dragons sculpted by famous blacksmith Samuel Yellin, intricately carved staircases, and so much more. The John Wanamaker Store in Center City, Philadelphia is neither a sacral space, nor a quiet place (although at the moment it is...), and still this is a location with great signifcance to my little virtual space here, as it is the home to the largest playable organ in the world. The Wanamaker Grand Court Organ is a ridiculously large instrument spanning (I'm not kidding you) five floors! It was constructed in 1904 for an exhibition. Some years later it was bought by Wanamaker and put into his huge store building, which was expanded by its very own organ workshop for easy maintenance. Wanamaker increased the complexity of the organ even further so that today it has over 28.500 pipes! The organ is/was played twice daily from Monday to Saturday by renowned organists. What I didn't know when I visited February 28th 2025 is that the department store would close permanently just three weeks later. The Wanamaker organ fell silent on March 22nd.
