SAThe Stone Roses on The Late Show, 1989 — their first UK TV performance. Mid-song, the power cut out. As the host tried to explain, Ian Brown just kept shouting “AMATEURS!” on live TV. The band stood there, bored but defiant… and you can see why pre-Oasis Gallagher brothers might’ve thought, “oh, that looks fun.”
Oasis would later say that seeing The Stone Roses changed everything for them. And you can see why.
I still remember the first time I heard their debut album. As a girl from Southern California, it wasn’t the soundtrack around me, but it stunned me silent. Instantly hooked.
Formed in Manchester in 1983, Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani, and Reni fused psychedelia, pop, and dance into something completely new. Their 1989 debut is still considered one of the greatest British albums ever.
