It’s Not "About" Something—It Is the Thing In Sámi culture, you don’t sing about a person, animal, or place; you yoik them. The song is meant to capture the very essence or soul of the subject. • If you yoik a wolf, the song mimics the characteristics of a wolf. • If you yoik a friend, the melody represents their personality. 2. Musical Style • Vocal-heavy: It usually consists of short, rhythmic phrases and chants. • No "Start" or "End": Traditional yoiks are often circular; they don't have a linear structure like a pop song. They can go on for as long as the singer feels the connection. • Minimal Lyrics: Often, a yoik uses "wordless" syllables (like lo-lo or nu-nu) rather than full sentences, using the tone and rhythm to convey meaning instead. 3. At the time, it was difficult to understand where this came from, but as I gradually learned more about the history of Norway and Sápmi, especially in Troms and Finnmark, and the coastal Sámi areas, this song came to life. SÁM: Dán lávlaga čállen go vázzen joatkkaskuvllas Romssas gos vásihin man ollu ovdagáttut, boasttudieđut ja váilevaš máhtu mu skuvlaoappáin ja vieljain lei sámi áššiid birra. Dat lei váttis ipmirdit manne lei nu, muhto go ohppen eambbo Norgga ja Sámi historjjá birra, erenoamážiid Romssas ja Finnmárkkus, de riegádii dát lávlla. NOR: Denne låten skrev jeg da jeg gikk på videregående skole i Tromsø, hvor jeg møtte både fordommer, misinformasjon og manglende kunnskap om samiske saker blant medelever. Det var vanskelig å forstå hvor dette kom fra, men etter hvert som jeg lærte mer om Norges og Sápmis historie, spesielt i Troms og Finnmark, ble denne låten til. For more than 400 years, people have gathered here to trade, share stories, music, skills, food, knowledge. But the roots go much deeper than that. The Sámi are the Indigenous people of this land. They have lived, travelled, listened, and cared for these territories for at least 10,000 years. Not separate from nature. Part of it. In relationship. As kin. You feel that here. It’s inspirational to see a people so proud of their heritage. The young folk listening and learning from elders. Crafts, stories and songs kept alive. The market isn’t just about buying and selling. It’s about keeping culture breathing. About remembering who belongs to this place. It’s been something a peak experience being here the last few days, the quality of aliveness even in -20 temps outside so much of the day.
